5.0 out of 5 stars Say It Ain't So, October 27, 1999
By
Karl Davis (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
"Say It Ain't So" is by Roland Gift, ex-Fine Young Cannibals. As far as I know it was never released, and only appears over the end credits of this film. I've tried to find it as a single or on an album, without success.

Roland's record company, London Records, do not have it on their catalogue, and I suspect that it isn't available anywhere. If anyone knows different, please let me know.

The only solution I can think of is to get the DVD and make an audio copy.

It's an awesome song, such a shame it wasn't included on the soundtrack.

Don't let this distract you from getting this soundtrack - it is still one of my favourites, 4 years after I first bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Fit For the Movie & Makes Great Mood Music, June 7, 2000
This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The CD for Stealing Beauty is a classic, a must-have for every '90's music fan, fans of sexy, trip-hop music, and fans of Billie Holiday and other classic love/blues artists. I've heard it played in several coffeehouses in Seattle, where it fit perfectly, and I often hear tracks from it on the radio. The songs, though different, and from different eras, go well together when played straight through. They track, in a way, the progression of the film as well, from the opening sequence shots of Liv Tyler with Hoover's "2 Wicky" to Sam Philips' "I Need Love" at the end, when she's finally found her love. In between lies the story told by the film, with party scenes and the great fire-lit sex scene recalled well with tracks such as Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Mazzy Star's hypnotic "Rhymes of an Hour." My two favorite tracks are the up and hopping "Rocket Boy" by Liz Phair, and Billie Holiday's classic "I'll Be Seeing You," and I also really like the last track, the bittersweet "I Need Love."

A song that's missing on the soundtrack is "Olympia" by Hole, which Tyler belts out (lip-synching) half-way through the film. As a Seattleite who grew up listening to Nirvana, I wish that track had been included.

I'd say, "buy this CD!" I've had it for years, and it still often gets airtime in my house. It gets you in a flirty, arty mood, just like the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stealing Beauty Soundtrack, December 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I agree with the others that it was a major disappointment that the Roland Gift song at the closing credits was not included. It is a fantastic song and I have been unable to get a copy. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite CD's to play while flying across the country or for cruising on long trips. Great eclectic group of great songs, none of which I would pass on.

Someone -- get me a copy of the Roland Gift song!

4.0 out of 5 stars great cd, but wheres the end title track by roland gift?, January 4, 2001

This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
like most people who saw this movie i thought it was well done. The music fit perfectly with the beautiful sceneary and deep emotions of the movie. It reminded me in many ways of the movie rushmore and its soundtrack. Without the music neither film would have been what they were. But one thing i cannot figure out to save my life is why the closing theme song (Say it Ain't So, by Roland gift) is not included in the soundtrack. That song is not only a great song but it perfectly summed up the movie and made a somewhat abrupt end seem almost perfect. Another thing, i cannot find anything from Roland gift anywhere, if anyone has any clues or knowledge about him please email me

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Soundtrack EVER!, February 4, 2001

While I was watching this movie for the first time, all I could think was "I bet this movie has an amazing soundtrack." Since then I've seen the movie 3 times, and I've noticed that every single song in it matches the mood of the scene perfectly, and on the soundtrack all the various songs, ranging from trip-hop ("Glory Box" by Portishead and "2 Wicky" by Hooover), jazz ("My Baby Just Cares for Me" by Nina Simone and "I'll Be Seeing You" by Billie Holiday), and girl rock ("You Won't Fall" by Sam Phillips and "Rocket Boy" by Liz Phair) all flow together smoothly.

Every song on this soundtrack is good... I am a big fan of soundtracks because I like to make CD mixes, and I could never have made a CD Mix as good as this one. I agree with some of the other reviewers that "Olympia" by Hole and "Say it Ain't So" by Roland Gift should have been included too, but otherwise this Soundtrack is flawless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roland Gift?, February 7, 2000

Where is the Roland Gift song that played during the credit? I won't buy the soundtrack (even though eclectic and wonderful) without it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent -- Would be PERFECT with Roland's "Say It Ain't..., February 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I loved the movie and even more so, the soundtrack. But, as many others are also wondering, why wasn't the best song of the movie (in my humble opinion) included! I would love to buy the CD again if it came out in a second release including Roland Gift's "Say It Ain't So". Still, the soundtrack is absolutely excellent! If anyone knows where or how to get a copy of that song I'd greatly appreciate the information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Re: Roland Gift, November 26, 2003
By A Customer

I wonder what happened to Roland Gift myself, plus Olympia by Hole. As far as finding a Cd with his songs you can get one at Barnes and Noble as an import from Japan for $40. Also Amazon has used and new copies of Roland Gift Cd's from 20 to as low as 17 dollars. Borders books and music including Tower Records has them too.

I hope this helps. I am going to purchase my Cd for Christmas and make another copy of the Stealing Beauty Cd that I have and add Say Aint So at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect mix!, January 11, 2001

We bought this CD after finding it on a listening kiosk in a record store - after dinner and a lot of wine, I had to turn to my husband and ask him "Is it my imagination or is every song on this CD great?" We've still never seen the movie, but the CD is one of our favorites. It's just the perfect mix of styles and rhythms!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top mood albums of the 90s!, August 4, 1999
By
This review is from: Stealing Beauty: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I initially reviewed this CD when it released, for an alternative newsweekly in Las Vegas. The staff then chose it as a "Pick of the Year" of the 500 or so albums we reviewed that year. To this day, of the 400 or so CDs I own, it is the only one that has a permanent place in my "car collection." An absolute must buy, must listen, must become addicted to collection of what 90s music should have been.
