Book Description

Deep in the backwoods of North Dakota, twenty–one year old Sarah Ross is searching for a missing child when she is attacked by a glowing–eyed, transparent... creature. Sarah survives, destroying the monster by using mysterious abilities she didn’t even know she had.

Bloody and bruised, Sarah flees the scene and runs directly into Evan Valente, a handsome, charismatic stranger who helps her back to safety. But what is Evan doing out in the forest at five in the morning?

Turning to a healer, Sarah is shocked to learn her eyes bear the mark of the Indigo Child—an evolved human with the ability to feel the emotions of others. But her indigo aura also makes her an easy target for those who wish to consume her powerful essence.

Soon, Sarah is falling deeply in love with Evan and wants nothing more than to follow her heart and trust that he is the man he says he is. But she can't ignore the lingering feeling that Evan is hiding a terrible secret. The deeper she digs, the more danger she faces, leading her on a course that will force her to face the darkest, innermost parts of her soul.

By it I mean your day, because once you dive into this story you will not be able to tear yourself away until the last page has been turned. Ms. Brothwell does a remarkable job of word painting. The characters are alluring but the sense of place is truly incredible and I was pulled right in as if I was there beside Sarah and Evan. I can't wait to read the next book to see how these characters and their relationship develops. I do not read a lot of paranormal or supernatural fiction as far too often I find the premise too jarring, too out there for me to suspend belief, but Stealing Breath kept me grounded to the characters and the story throughout. Good fiction makes you forget it is fiction. Great fiction makes you forget to pick the kids up from school. That reminds, anybody seen my son?

4.0 out of 5 stars Read to my Heart's Content Reviews January 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely love the cover, first and foremost! What a beautiful color to have as your aura! I think that caught my attention before anything thing else could have; but then I read the blurb and my interest was definitely peaked.
This has a very original idea and one that has a lot of potential for the creativity that can come from it. The idea of a very special and magical human that can "feel" people's emotions as well as having a very powerful aura to go with it, of course, can bring about a lot of different supernatural beings.
The characters are well developed but I have to say I am slightly partial to the Native Americans in the story, having 1/4 of Cherokee in my blood, and enjoying listening to the many different folktales from that particular heritage.
Sarah is pretty strong female lead, even though she does tend to question her actions a lot, I feel like she is pretty accepting of everything for the most part. Especially since she already has that "otherworld" feel to herself.
I love that this book is an 'New Adult' one because I feel like Ms. Brothwell can push the romance factor in this story just a little bit and give us that edge that makes Stealing Breath even more breathtaking.
The relationship between Sarah and Evan does advance a little quickly but I also enjoyed the fact that there was still some distrust there; along with some angst among them that showed us it was more of down to earth relationship instead of the "too good to be true" ones.
I really enjoyed Stealing Breath so much for a variety of reasons. I love the way the author found a way to work two different heritages together where they can find a common ground and come up with such an amazing backdrop to a very interesting story line.
I have heard many different versions of "skinwalkers" but this one by far the most interesting. I also like the Italian lore that contributed to Evan's mysterious background. Oh and how unique is "Indigo Child"? I love that concept too, especially with having to do with their eyes. Eye color is a very unique trait for people and to revolve a tale around that -great idea!
All in all, I really believe everyone should give Stealing Breath a try. It is has so many emotions playing throughout including terror, respect, betrayal, love, and loss. It uses such an unique concept that it would be hard not to get carried away in Sarah's feelings.
I received a copy of this book for my review of it.

More About the Author

Joanne Brothwell lives in the country on the Canadian prairie where her stories are inspired by the dead things that appear at her doorstep on a daily basis. Of course, her two pets, a retired police dog with titanium fangs and a feral barn cat missing two toes, make the safety of surrounding wildlife, at best, uncertain.

Joanne is known to daydream, and ever since grade school has been accused of having a poor attention span. The truth is, Joanne has an alternate reality inside her head, where characters speak to her, sometimes so loudly (and incessantly) she just can't hear anything else!

You can rest assured you'll see much more of Joanne's writing in the future, as those characters in her head, having tasted the sweet freedom of release, simply refuse to be silenced!
