This story is based on a boy named Jake and how a family takes him in. Because Jake has been cursing and smoking it will be really hard to make him apart of the family. This story is also about a girl named E.D. and how she finds that she fits in with her family. To me this story gets boring but I think some kids will like it. I'm just really picky about the books I...

This story is called STEALING SOUTH : A Story Of The Underground Railroad by Katherian Ayers. The underground railroad is people that help others escape from slavery. I think you would like this book if you like stories about slavery and freeing slaves. This book has 201 pages. In the beginning of the book, Will and his brother Tom are helping Noah, a slave, escape to freedom. Tom dumped bacon grease on his shoe to confuse the slave hunter's dogs. In the story they help get slaves free by sneaking them out. If you want to know more about this book I think you should read it.

A Kid's Review
I think that Stealing South is a great book. It's about a teenage boy named Will who lives in Atwater, Ohio. He's going through Cincinnati and Kentucky to get to Canada to help Noah, a slave, escape to freedom. Noah wants Will to rescue both his brother James and his sister Susan, too. On the way Will meets a girl named Elisa and wants her to come with him to help the slaves escape. Will has them float down the river with ropes tied to their waists and a barrel at the other end to help them float. Another problem that Will runs into is some slave hunters go on the wagon set it on fire. If you want to know if they resue Noah's brother and his sister successfully, you should read Stealing South

5.0 out of 5 stars uderground railroad, April 1, 2003
A Kid's Review
Stealing South will teach you about the underground railroad. The book is about a boy named Will who becomes a peddler to help slaves get to a place where it's safe. This book has some funny moments and some gross parts. I liked this book because I enjoy learning about the underground railroad. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Even though I have read a few underground railroad books, I would still like to learn more about it. The author is Katherine Ayres she also wrote North by Night. If you really want to learn more about this book you should read Stealing South.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two boys help slaves, March 31, 2003
A Kid's Review
Stealing South was written by Katherine Ayres. During the days of slaves there were two boys. One was named Will and his brother was Tom. One day, near Kentucky, Tom was helping a slave, Noah, get away from his owner. When they were almost to a safe spot they got pulled over by the slave's owner. Luckily they never found Noah because he was hiding in a hole in the floorboards. When the three of them arrived at the safe spot, Noah asked Tom and Will to help his family get out of Kentucky. Tom and Will agreed to help him.
This was one of my favorite books because I think its good that somone cares for the slaves. But if you want to find out if Will and Tom get caught or not, read this book and learn for yourself.

Stealing South
By Katherine Ayres

This is a very good book. It's one of thoughs books you say to your mom, "Just one more chapter or page!" But end up reading the whole story. Stealing South is about a boy named William Spenser that goes by Will. He travels all over the country. He goes from state to state saving slaves. I gave it five stars because I enjoyed the adventure and I believe this story is very good for all ages. Once you finish it you'll be at the edge of your seat. Read it and you'll know what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Story Worthy of Classroom Discussion, March 3, 2004

This well-researched novel would nicely complement a classroom discussion of the Underground Railroad. Rich with opportunities for corresponding map-making, the story follows 16-year-old Will Spencer as he travels from Ohio into Kentucky. With his peddlers wagon, Will hopes not only to make a living for himself but also to carry slaves North toward freedom. A blend of history and suspense, this book is most memorable for the characters commitment to noble, yet dangerously unpopular, ideals.

If you like very adventurous books you should read this book called Stealing South. It is about a boy named Will. He helped a runaway slave cross into Canada. This runaway's name is Noah. He told Will that his brother, James, was going to be hung. Noah pleaded with Will to go on the journey of saving James, using an arrow head for proof that he is not a slave catcher. Will is taking cover as a peddler. He meets many enemies and a few friends. The rest is left a mystery to you unless you read it .

4.0 out of 5 stars Stealing South, September 11, 2003

I think Stealing South is a very good book. Although I like North by Night better, it is still very good. This book is about Will Spencer, who is his town leaving town of Atwater, Ohio, to become a peddler at 16. His family has been part of the Underground Railroad for many years. So he decides help Noah, a runaway slave to free his brother and sister before making his way north. But his journey takes much longer than expected. During his trip he meets several very generous people who own slaves and begins to wonder if what he is doing is right. Even though he is against slavery, he doesn't like getting to know people and then taking their slaves. He agrees to take six young boys and an elderly and an elderly woman to the slave market. Instead he takes them all, even Noah's sister, out of slavery. This book is a good page-turner, so once you start reading, you won't be able to stop until you finish the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars PARENTS USE CAUTION: grown up topics, February 11, 2011
This coming-of-age story features Will, a young white man in an abolitionist family who becomes a traveling peddler. He is determined to drive south, steal slaves off their plantation, and bring them north to freedom. His plan does not work out just as he has planned - there is unexpected danger and suspense and a very brave rescue.

Will is a likable character, determined to do what is right. He is shocked by the dual nature of people - how slave holders can be charitable to strangers, for example. The major theme in this book is slave-breeding - this is an adult topic. At certain points in the book, in order to keep the deception going, Will has to pretend to have sex with the slave girl Susannah.
