This is one of the most entertaining movies we have watched. I am sure we enjoy it much more because we have seen Steam Powered Giraffe live *many* times this Summer (they perform daily at the San Diego Zoo during Summer Nights!). If you have seen them perform live, you will recognize a lot of the skits/comedy from their performances (a good thing). My 2-yr old really enjoys this - mostly for the music, but also for much of the robots' performances. Most notably, she acts out the performances of Rabbit (this isn't even my house!) and The Jon (I dropped my sandwich!). More importantly, this has inspired my little 2 yr old to play music. She already had a keyboard and guitar, but we have since bought her a melodica and a drum set. I highly recommend this movie - we started with the $1.99 rental and will be buying the dvd. Thanks, Steam Powered Giraffe!

How does one even begin to review Steam Powered Giraffe?
Sure, there are some words that immediately come into mind:
Robot-y
Stripes
Hat and
Toast
All accurately and quite elegantly describe what has come to be my favourite part of the year 2012, and yet those seemingly unrelated and silly words could never hope to encompass every aspect of their characters, stories, music, performances, and appearance (the very thing that drew me to them in the beginning).
Steam Powered Giraffe is, in my opinion, a new incarnation of the old (and sadly seeming to be dying out) art of fully immersive performances of an age long past. Acts now may have outlandish characters and excellent storytelling, they may have stunning costumes and amazing body movement, they might have excellent voices and an incredible talent for composition and impeccable musicality, but very rarely do you come across an (act? troupe? band?) that possesses each and every one of those traits and yet is still evolving and seems to be constantly striving to present the viewer or listener with something beyond what is already anticipated or expected. They are entertainers and thought provokers, storytellers and story inspiration.

Watch the movie. Laugh at it, cry on it, wonder about the Kentucky Derby.
Then
If you can, see them live.
If you cant, see their online work (and then plan on seeing them live. It is something you wont ever forget, I assure you.)

Steam Powered Giraffe in no small way changed not only my opinion of music today, they changed my view of artistry in motion and have given me new hope in a time where sometimes there just doesnt seem to be any wonder left in the world.
If you ever read this, thank you.
If they never do, you the reader get a thank you from me too. Thank you for taking the time to join me in the enjoyment of this amazing group.

Welcome to the Fanmily.

Steam Powered Giraffe is a band a lot of love put into it, and the DVD shows it. There's no nonsense here, just what the fans and curious alike want to see--the music, humour, and theatrical talent the band has to offer. It's a Vaudevillian experience having live music with comedy skits in between, and believe it, both aspects are spot on. Listening to SPG's music on CD is great, but here you get to feel the full experience as closely as it can be replicated without watching them live. The gears click, steam escapes, and you're drawn in.

People of all ages can enjoy SPG, as evidenced by many reviews here by people with children who adore SPG. I can also tell you that older people can enjoy this band. I had my parents watch this film with me (both are over the age of 50) and they were absolutely entranced. They appreciated the musical quality of a band that many might scoff at for their whimsical comedy or peculiar get-ups, learning that their musical styling is articulate and rich. Their miming abilities made my mother ask me if I was serious in telling her that they were just humans in makeup and not real robots. Performance art and music such as this really does span a wide range, inciting the wonderment of many age groups.

In the band's own words, the experience of this DVD is "epic and so cool." Fans will relish in the chance to see more of the beloved bots, and the newcomers will be sent on a journey full of music, miming, and mystifying moments.

I know 3 girls (7, 8, 10) who absolutely LOVE Rabbit, The Spine, The Jon and the rest of the crew and they truly loved this video. I found the "story-line" very weak, but if you just want some SPG music videos it is great. The kids thought it was hilarious (especially when Rabbit tipped over the table), and really, that is all that matters.

Greatest movie I've seen in a very long time. It transitions perfectly from comedy to music throughout the entire extent of the movie. I am a little sad that the makeup tutorials weren't included in the movie itself. Now I know I'm just going to have to buy the complete DVD from SPG's website. Personally, I think this was the best $2 I've ever spent. I've watched it nonstop since the day I rented it, and I won't stop watching it until the day it expires. Thank you, Steam Powered Giraffe for this amazing movie.

I rented this DVD at the behest of my teen-aged step-daughter. I was prepared for another audio onslaught (think: If it's too loud, you're too old!) but was pleasantly surprised to find the music quite listenable, and the antics of SPG very amusing, in a Monty Python sort of way. In short: a great DVD and one that won't offend anyone (well, my wife was a bit creeped out by the robot makeup). The fact that it is non-offensive would tend to scare off their target audience of teens and young adults but SPG is doing quite well. They are entertainers first and foremost, but they are also very good musicians and extremely talented vocalists - very tight harmonies and Spine has a range you won't believe.

I am thinking of buying the DVD outright, plus I hope they come close enough to us for us to go and see them in person. If the DVD is this good, I can only imagine how silly, amusing, and entertaining their live shows must be!
