Editorial Reviews

A Clock Maker, A Millionaire, A Time-Machine Mechanic & A Confused Navigator travel across time spreading their music and encouraging people to use steam engines and analog clockwork. They are "The Cog is Dead," a time-traveling steampunk musical group who rock the world with their eclectic mix of incredibly fun, catchy and sometimes downright epic songs about clockwork, steam power, good, evil and of course love. This is their debut album, Steam Powered Stories, and it's chock full of marvelous mechanical melodies sure to leave songs stuck in your head and have you coming back for more.

It does house a combination of various styles of music from multiple time periods.

I hope this does really well for the band, and that we get to hear more of their steam-powered stories before too long.

Each song is a different story and it is very entertaining how they wrote the songs.

This has become my favorite album in very short order. The entire album is set up like an old radio serial under the name "Steam Powered Stories." Once the songs start there are occasional call backs to the supposed radio structure, such as the end of one song where a news bulletin is inserted which directly sets up the next song. I really like this structure, but some might find it irritating.

Each of the songs is vastly different than all the others; this can make for a very strange listening experience to go from "Time Machine," a melancholy but hopeful story about a scientist trying to save his dieing wife, directly into "The Inventor's Daughter," a silly and irreverent story about nontraditional love. Don't think that steampunk means pseudo-victorian either, the song styles are all over the place. My favorite surprise is an upbeat reggae styled love song.

Basically, if you're interested in music with a strong narrative thread this is a great album. Be sure to listen to it in order, too.

I listened to this so often on sites like Youtube, that I finally had to do the decent thing and buy a copy. Not so easy, since I'm in the UK, and Amazon.co.uk aren't selling it yet.

So I bought it on this site, and paid the UK Government's extortionate import tax when it arrived. I don't regret a penny of it. I don't think I've had so much fun listening to an album since the days of The Beatle's Sergeant Pepper.

(For some reason - perhaps because of the narrative flow - this album keeps making me think of Sergeant Pepper...)

Almost every track is a mini-story, and it's all great. Infectiously-enthusiastic, foot-tappin', singalong Steampunky goodness!

It's hard to pick a favourite track - my preference changes on almost a daily basis.

I hope this does really well for the band, and that we get to hear more of their steam-powered stories before too long.

Buy it! Now!

"The Cog is Dead" has released their first CD, "Steam Powered Stories" in a burst of optimism and enthusiasm. I love the music, and the lyrics are interesting and easy to listen to.

The one gripe I have is that the lyrics are a little clumsy in spots, relying too heavily on "poetic" inverted word order. Is this an intentional choice, driven by the genre? I don't know, but it grates on modern ears.

I hope they continue to produce new work, and I hope their lyrics get more sophisticated.

How would one best go about describing this delectable collection of Steam Powered Stories?

It's 33% David Bowie, 33% Tim Burton, 33% Rocky Horror Picture Show, 33% Walt Disney, with a sprinkling of 1% Monty Python's Flying Circus! Add it all together and you come up with . . . er . . . carry the one . . . um . . . divide by zero . . . FORTY-TWO!

These Time Traveling Minstrels have come to our age with this wondrous collection of adventures--each one different in its musical style--ranging from a mechanical menagerie of animals, continuing on to a lament about the invention of the electric clock, climaxing with an air battle against pirates!

If you've never tasted the aural treats of Steampunk before, this is the finest smorgasbord to belly up to! The Cog is Dead's musical tales will carry you along, start to finish in an delightfully whimsical way--even providing the steam for the calliope of your imagination.

This band is fantastic. I love the gypsy beats, the beautiful haunting melodies and the fantastic lyrics. Quirky but totally listenable for the non steampunkers too. I can't get the songs out of my head. I love the way there is a story of Tom and Michelle that is continued on the next CD. Gee, I wish these guys would come to Australia. Enjoy this one when you buy it.

As far as music goes, a wide range of styles all on one CD. Great musical quality, and very much steampunk. Unfortunately, I can honestly say that there are some songs on this disc that can be skipped. Overall, it is a very good album, but it is lacking some of the soul that other bands in this genre put into their music. This album sounds very much like amateur wedding singers covering steampunk.

It must be an artistic rule to alternate between fast and slow songs. Some serious, some downright silly. In this case, the premise is a sequence of different stories, so the differing tempos isn't very jarring. I've been dragooned into doing a lecture on steampunk music, next Spring, and this one album is representative of the range of styles within the genre.

I have become enamored with this new/old thing called steampunk, and this album portrays steampunk quite well. Even though some of the songs arent quite upbeat, I enjoy all the songs on the album. Right up there with Abney Park. =)
