5.0 out of 5 stars Praise for the Eighth Edition (1990), January 18, 2009
If you live either in Canada or in the northern United States, (I live in Southern Ohio), you'll find this book a worthy companion in the field for identifying trees.

The book is much oriented to the newcomer to the tree study hobby and/or profession in that nearly every aspect of each tree is conveyed in high-quality black-and-white photographs: the bark, leaves, buds, cones, flowers, and much more. The range maps of the various species are also quite excellent. As a life-long naturalist I have found this book to be very easy to use and I always take it along on outings, especially when I travel north.

This work is sort of an "official" one, first being published in 1917 and detailing about 100 trees at that time. Since then the book has undergone numerous revisions and now covers nearly 140 tree species. There is a technical guide in the front of the book which explains some of the jargon (both in text and by illustration) including leaf types.

The softcover Eighth Edition, published in 1990, is 380 pages in length which includes the index and various "keys" to identification. Of all my numerous tree books, (about 60), this comprehensive and authoritative work is in my top five.

Highly recommended.
