5.0 out of 5 stars Book review for Steamboat Virginia V, May 29, 2002
This review is from: Steamboat: Virginia V (Paperback)
...this book ... is about the propeller driven excursion steamer Virginia V.The Vrginia V is the last steamer remaining of a once vast fleet of Puget Sound, Washington steamboats stretching back to the 1850s. from the sidewheeler "Fairy" which was so small that a Pioneer's mattress covered nearly all of the back deck. to the giant propeller ferryboats capable of ocean navigation. in between, lovely and plain steamers were built. largepassenger sidewheelers like the"Eliza Anderson" and the elegant "T.J. Potter", powered by giant walking beam engines. to flatbottom river sternwheelers and deep hull sternwheelers capable of sailing the deep and dark waters of Puget Sound.and on to the double-ender ferryboatshaving a steering house and rudder on both the bow and stern. and to the early gasoline freighters.of these ships only the "Virginia V" in service for over 70 years remains. The author includes in the book thatrareity, of rareities. a plan of a Puget Sound steamer the Virginia V.The plans consist of clear drawings of the top of the steamer hull, a side view of the steamer interior showing the engine room, the passenger seating, and the lunch room.and the all important body plan, which shows the ribs or frames of a hull to which planking was attached to. This book is a must for anyone interested in the ships of Puget Sound area of the State of Washington.
