Emphasis is on a healthy cooking method with excellent flavor.,

This review is from: Steaming: Great Flavor, Healthy Meals (Healthy Cooking Series) (Hardcover)
This book puts emphasis on using steaming as a cooking method. This method reduces any oil needed for the food as well as locking in all the flavor and keeping the texture of the food.
Many people only think of vegetables when steaming and then steam them to death on top of it. Most of the recipes in this cookbook are oriental as perhaps that culture has been the leader in steam cooking. I made the Chicken and Spinach Wontons and they were wonderful. The book also covers steaming of other vegetables making them look like artforms. The Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms and the Squash Soup in the gourd were beautiful. I'm not sure I could eat them after I'd finished cooking them because they were so pretty. Many of these recipes do take some time to prepare. There is wrapping of wontons, using multiple wrappers, making California rolls, Sushi, Veal Rolls, Thai Fish Curry which were all time consuming to get such beauty. The Fish wrapped in toasted seaweed was beautiful. There were even desserts, Grand Marnier Creme Caramel, Fruitcakes, and Creamy Coconut Black Rice Pudding. The tips and training for steaming that are in this book are excellent. You would learn the trade without question. There are less than 50 recipes in this book so it's a little expensive per recipe. But if you want to learn steaming the techniques are here.

I thought I would purchase a book to go along with my purchase of my new steamer. When I received the book and looked through to see what I could make as a meal and was surprised to see that almost all the Items weren't that common to me and seemed a bit fancy for my simple tastes. Was a bit disappointed and gave it away to someone that I knew those types of foods would appeal to.

I bought this book to accompany an electric 3 tier steamer as a wedding shower gift. The cover and title do not accurately describe the contents. Instead of it being about steaming and everyday food it has Asian recipes with odd ingredients. The recipes are so ethnic with such unknown ingredients that I would be afraid to try most of them. Very disappointed!

Any "how to" book such as a cookbook is useless to me if it can't even contain a glossary. Otherwise it's just pages of shopping lists. I am the kind of cook that looks at what they have on hand, starts with the glossary and alters recipes accordingly. This book does have excellent illustrations though and a forward that explains Asian ingredients (very limited). That's why I give it two stars. Without a glossary though, if you buy something you have to look through the entire book to see if you can use what you didn't use while preparing one of the dishes. I'm not poor, I just hate to waste!

I love to cook and I'm usually interested in a cookbook that will teach me new ways of preparing and cooking food. This book was a lot thinner than I expected and didn't really provide any "ah ha!" moments for me. I simply wasn't impressed.
