In steampunk jewelry, you expect a lot of cogs, gears and mechanical looking things. So one of my favorite parts of this book is at the end. Instructions on how to take apart non-working mechanical watches and clocks for those essential supplies.

The jewelry ideas are fantastic and easy to customize, the author uses mixed media to create wonderful assemblages which reflect steampunk aesthetic values.

The author, in her voice as Emilly Ladybird, explorer, writes stories about each piece of jewelry which create a mood for the pieces.

The designs use polymer clay, rubber stamps, brass stampings, paint, inks and watch parts along with more traditional supplies like chains, jump rings and beads.

It's all inspiring. You may not have all the pieces for a specific design, but that design could well inspire one of your own. Such as the Zeppelin Pirate Necklace, a tiered charm necklace that tells a story. One of the main design points on it are lovely handmade findings using polymer clay and wire. If the zeppelin design isn't to your taste, using vintage images of roses and charms and pieces that go with that would create a necklace that's similar in construction but utterly different in feel. While some of the jewelry calls for re-purposed things, there are also pieces that call for completely modern and easy to find pieces like the Green Fairy Cufflinks.

The photographs explaining how to make each piece and the techniques used are clear and easy to understand. The other photographs, the costumed photos which set the mood are just delightful.
There are tips on some pages in boxes marked Inquire Within.

If you have an interest in steampunk, or you have people you want to make things for who have an interest in steampunk, this book has some wonderful ideas. My son loved this even more than I did.

If you want to start doing steampunk projects this book can be the first step. It shows you what you need to do by taking several typical projects and following step-by-step the crafter as she does them. It helpfully lays out the tools and materials you will need for each project up front. I look forward to doing some projects myself with the techniques in this book.

I've read a few books on Steampunk jewelry. This one is now my favorite. The style and layout of the book is very attractive and easy to read, and the projects are appealing. Step by step instructions plus a list of suppliers make this a great addition to any maker's library.

I'm a beginner in jewelry making, so when I saw the Steampunk Emporium book, I just passed it by. Little did I know, my boyfriend bought me the book as one of my gifts.

To say that it is beautifully made is an understatement.

I'll be starting on the first item in the book within a week or two!

If you are afraid that you won't *get* it, trust me..just get the book. The instructions are clear and it's whimsical.

Part of Steampunk is making up stories about your character and your accessories. This is a good introduction to using stories about what the jewelry pieces are for and what they do. Each section has a cute story with a clockwork type fairy image. It uses basic jewelry techniques along with polymer clay and mixed media. An index of projects and stories completes the book, along with a listing of resources and Steampunk groups.

While much of the book is targeted to the female steampunk, there are several projects that will appeal to the Neo-Victorian guys. Some of the designs fall into the "glue some gears on it an call it steampunk" category, and I am a man who thinks that clock gears look best IN a clock. Having said that, Hewitt's designs are lovely.

The book is packed with pictures and step-by-step instructions to recreate the various projects. I liked the little stories at the beginning of each project, they really set the mood. The book has a well developed Index and Resources at the back of the book.

All in all, I think that it is a fine resource for the person looking to add some final touches to their costume. While many of the designs were not to my taste, I found the book to be very inspirational. I give Steampunk Emporium 4 stars out of 5.
