I must admit, I had become fairly jaded of late what with the amount of people seeking to cash in on the next big thing that is Steampunk. Seems like everyone from clothing retailers to scrapbookers are gluing some cogs on and looking to make a quick buck. Thank goodness Strongman's Steampunk: The Art of Victorian Futurism is light on cogs and heavy with truly fascinating and inspirational art work sourced from all over the world. For the paltry money you'll spend, you get a beautifully presented hard cover art book. The attention to detail right down to the moire effect cloth binding through to the beautifully produced images within make it the perfect gift for everyone from the die hard Steampunk addict to the punter with a passing interest. It covers beautiful illustrations and photographs right through to mind boggling gadgets and amazing wearable art.

The book is packed with information about not only the rise of the genre but in-depth profiles on each of the featured artists.

Definitely one for the Christmas gift list. It is truly the best and most well put together Steampunk resource I've come across.

Both my boyfriend and I love steampunk so I decided to buy this book for the two of us. The artwork and photos in this book is beautiful. When it arrived we looked at it for 2 hours straight. Just as a FYI for people out there wanting to buy this for kids, there are a couple of topless photos of women in here.

This is certainly one of the best books on Steampunk around at the moment, at least for those of us who appreciate the work of the artists and makers currently engaged with the scene.
This is a beautiful, well-presented volume, copiously illustrated with high-quality photographs and printed on good glossy paper. There is a strong emphasis on 3-dimensional work - small-scale sculpture, constructs, jewellery, mod. work etc., but with fairly good coverage of graphic work, some painting (mainly digital), photomontage and photography.
Inevitably, some of the illustrations have appeared in other volumes, but this is perhaps the book that offers both the best context and the highest quality reproduction of the work; It is certainly worth acquiring even if you have other books on the subject.
The text is informative, with an introduction and an illustrated essay "The rise of steam"; there are brief introductions to each of the 18 artists/makers showcased. I personally would have preferred more painting in traditional media, as I know there are many fine artists/illustrators working in the genre (Vadim Voitekhovitch, for example), but this is still a very worthwhile volume, with a few names not featured in other books.

A very recommendable book all in, offering a good visual take on Steampunk arts & crafts.

If you love Steampunk or want to know more about it, get this book.

Have you ever bought a book and wanted to show it to everyone? Steampunk: The Art of Victorian Futurism is that kind of book.

Yesterday, while doing "face time" with my daughter, I was showing her the pictures. I flipped through the pages as she leaned closer to her phone to see on the small screen. I'm sure she wasn't getting the full effect, but my excitement spurred her to squint and admire.

So, why is the book so great?

Four reasons:
First and foremost, the pictures and illustrations. I'd estimate the book devotes two thirds of its pages to excellent, high quality photographs. I've included three in the post so you can have a little taste of what you'll get.
It does a good job of exploring the literary roots of Steampunk, including a run down of authors who influenced the literary movement. I enjoyed the pictures of magazine covers from the old pulp-fiction writing of the 1800s.
There's good coverage of early, middle, and contemporary Steampunk authors. I sometimes found the prose a little dull, but over all it held my interest.
It addresses the sub-cultures that have emerged from the Steampunk literary movement: writers, books, magazines, fashion, art, cosplay, craftsmanship, music, conferences and exhibits.

I expected The Art of Victorian Futurism to focus on the art, but the book went beyond my expectations. I have to give Jay Strongman kudos for selecting and showcasing excellent photographs and illustrations. Also, in the early chapters, he gives detailed background information on Steampunk's beginnings and the movement's progress up to 2011.
