I have the SoSpenders 38ALNG auto/manual PFD, which I love because it's so comfortable that I can wear it all the time. Here's what I do. . . .

Every winter or spring, before the new sailing season, I deploy the PFD manually by pulling the red tab on the string. This inflates the PFD, providing a test of last year's canister and the PFD itself, which I leave inflated to see if it has any leaks. If it deflates very slowly over a couple of days, that's a successful test.

If I have an unused (extra) canister left over from the previous season, and it's not out-of-date, I re-arm the PFD with that and go online to purchase a new one to have on hand. In any case, I like to have two up-to-date canisters: one in the PFD and one for backup (in case the PFD is automatically deployed to save my life and I have to re-arm it afterwards).

So far, over a period of eight years, the PFD and the canisters have always passed the test.

This is an item that is hard to review. If it works as expected, then the last one you had purchased was the one that you should be reviewing. If it doesn't work, then you have drown and you can't review it.

I'll give it 5 stars if it saves my life. I will give it *SPLASH* 1 (GLUB GLUB GLUB) star if (GLUB).....

This is a re fill for my SoSpenders life jacket. It automatically fills the life jacket with air when you fall in the water. The original worked just fine. Can't rate this one yet but I'm sure it will work as well. Amazon had what I needed and at the right price.
