5.0 out of 5 stars THE QUINTESSENTIAL MEDICAL DICTIONARY...
This is a comprehensive, medical dictionary that is well organized and cross-referenced. Its use is made more interesting by the inclusion of etymologies. It is not, however, for doctors only. 3.0 out of 5 stars You can't trust a book by it's cover...
Good dictionary. However, there are better ones (particularly Tabers). I have less physically attractive medical dictionaries with no color and a boring cover that seem to have the definitions I am looking for when Stedman's doesn't. Adequate dictionary but perhaps Taber's in a better value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kendra's Review, July 30, 2007
This review is from: Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. The book is a good source for medical terms and their meanings. There are also nice color illustrations as well. The book also contained a CD-ROM which included a spellchecker and additional images. I highly recommend this book if you are planning to take any medical courses.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for medical professionals, July 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is a good book. It provides basic information on many topics; however, it is not a worthwhile investment for a medical student. Medical students and doctors are held to a significantly higher standard of knowledge than this book (or really any book of this sort) can offer.

For quick reference you'll do better using UpToDate or any of the numerous electronic references avalable at any good medical school / teaching hospital.

If you are not looking for an MD level of knowledge then this isn't a bad book. Of course you could save your money and get the same thing off the web faster, but that is really personal preference.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful tool, especially during your first year, November 26, 2008

every med student needs a good dictionary and this one fit the bill for me. its too large to take with you. try tabers if you need something portable. this definitely helped me navigate first year, where it seemed like the profs were speaking a different language!

1.0 out of 5 stars The alphabet indicator tabs did not match the pages, September 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)
The alphabet indicator tabs ("ABC", "DEF", "GHI") did not match the pages in the Stedman Medical dictionary; and upon receiving 3 replacements, the mistake was duplicated and "triplicated" (but with different page problems) with each book that I received as a replacement and thus my frustration mounted with each dictionary I received. This is poor quality control and it was a very frustrating experience. On top of this, Amazon said that they would "do something" because of the 3 books that I received that were wrong and how I was inconvenienced and how they understood how upset I got. To date, nothing has been done. I was told by Amazon to buy the book elsewhere, which I just did -from the publisher. I am still waiting for Amazon to "do something" to make me feel like my 10++ years as a bona fide member of Amazon was worth something to them. I think they might have gotten too big!

I needed a hard copy medical dictionary to go with an online course. Since new books are expensive, bought this used copy. It is in perfect condition and arrived very quickly. The new ones come with software but this one did have it. Would have been nice to know in advance of purchase, although would probably purchased anyway.

I have always wanted a good Medical Dictionary and this is it. It does helps you with the pronunciation of the words. It also explains a lot of breakdowns of the word.

5.0 out of 5 stars a long-time standard biomedical reference book, September 7, 2007

This review is from: Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)
Stedman's is a great reference book with lots of up-to-date information. It's a necessity for anyone involved in any of the branches of biomedicine or the allied health professions.

The only disappointment is the accompanying CD. It is really worthless. It contains artwork and images that are mostly low resolution and add little of value to the written text. If the publishers want to give readers a useful CD or set of CDs, then provide a precis' with as much detail as possible from the entire printed volume in PDF format that can be loaded onto a PC or add some informative animations. But forget about the fuzzy still images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrations and references, June 11, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)
I am not in the health-care field, but am a big health-care consumer, and read a lot of technical books on various diseases. This dictionary has been invaluable in looking up terms I've encountered in other books, and just for general information. I usually end up with four or five fingers stuck in the book as I read one entry and need or want to look up something from the entry, or just see an interesting page.

A lot of very useful charts, such as abbreviations, blood test descriptions, and more.
