Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This cheerfully inane jiggle series is set in 1920s Japan. Forced by bullies to explore an eerie mansion, adolescent Nakahito inadvertently awakens the cyborg or "Steel Angel" created by Dr. Ayankoji. A long-haired babe in a French maid's outfit, Kurumi proclaims Nakahito her "master" and will accept orders only from him. But Kurumi is also an extraordinarily powerful robot sought by the military. The mismatched Nakahito and Kurumi, and Dr. Ayankoji and Nakahito's older brother Kamihito, find themselves drawn into a baroque plot involving a lecherous army general, various spies, and a second Steel Angel named "Saki." Steel Angel Kurumi often plays like Urusei Yatsura, but without Rumiko Takahashi's wit. As the episodes are only 15 minutes long, the DVD is fleshed out with copious notes, production sketches, and interviews. Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up: Nudity, minor profanity, violence, risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

4.0 out of 5 stars I Dream of Jeannie - Missing Magic, June 6, 2002
By
This review is from: Steel Angel Kurumi - Angel on My Shoulder (Vol. 1) (DVD)
This was a fun show upon first viewing it. The male lead, Nakahito goes into a mansion and finds a robot. By pure accident, the robot falls on him and he kisses it. The robot comes to life afterward. Upon looking at Nakahito, Kurumi which is the robot, sees him as her master. Kurumi calls Nakahito, "Master" throughout the entire show. This is true even for the Japanese version. As the story progresses, other new characters will show up eventually to complicate things.

This show feels like watching "I Dream of Jeannie". Kurumi calls Nakahito "Master" throughout the whole show. She will follow him to the ends of the Earth. You can also tell she is in love with him. Kurumi is like a child learning about the modern world. She tries to learn and understand about the culture she is in and adapt to it. Jeannie in "I Dream of Jeannie" was going through the same struggle.

The coolest feature on this DVD would be the extras. The extras are listed in edition details. The extras make this disk worth your money. I would highly recommend this title. Although I have only seen the first disk so far, I can tell this can be a very good show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, May 28, 2002
This review is from: Steel Angel Kurumi - Angel on My Shoulder (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Extremely short episodes hilight what could be another Saber Marionette J: a boy awakens a robot girl and becomes her master. She's programmed to adore him. But, the series is original enough to break those bondaries. Saki, the next 'droid, is awakened by Kurumi because Kurumi don't want her honey kissing no one else. Oops! "Oops!" because they are programmed with loving devotion to their awakener and Kurumi just awakened her!

Nudity highlights the variances (breif anime nudity, but very sexy girls); fan service pops up a little in the first episode. The setting itself is 1919 Japan thereabouts, but none of this could have happened then (I have seen hints that there are other forces at work). I can throw out the technical flaws because it is my type of show: lively.

Overall, this is a series for people who like boy-girl interaction, who like android girls who squeal in joy over little things and then can kick major buttocks. Who are mechanical in body, not soul. The characters will have to be your main interest in watching it: it isn't an action flick, it isn't a skin flick, it's a flick about tempermental young ladies, budding romances, mistaken amour, and generally clean, wholesome fun with some mature zest to flavor. Slapstick with balloon heads and whining and sillyness permeate it on occasion.

If those things aren't your cup of tea, don't bother. But for someone who likes people flicks, a lively show, it's decent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, August 1, 2002
This review is from: Steel Angel Kurumi - Angel on My Shoulder (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Steel Angel Kurumi ia the beginning up a series about robots with human emotion but so much power that makes them dangerous. The star,Kurumi,is the most dangerous of the Angels that were created because of the power that her "heart" has. It's funny & has a lil bit of action too,you gotta buy it!The epoisodes are short & the whole dvd may only be 90 minutes long but it's one that by the time your done watching over and over, you'll just want to once more watch it over! When I brought Steel Angel Kurumi I didn't think it would be as good as it was,in fact I only got it because Buffy & Record of Lodoss War(which is another great anime you would love even if it does cost an unreasonable amount of money)was too much. However if I like it then I can almost bet you will too!!!
