5.0 out of 5 stars Most accurate tank simulator for a PC
This is the most realistic M1 tank simulator for a home PC. The army has spent millions of dollars making similar systems to train tankers. As a gunner on a M1A1, serving in Iraq, I can say that Steel Beasts has no equal. I use it to train new soliders on gunnery. I can use it to train them on the main sight, emergency sight, with no fire control system, LRF. The...

5.0 out of 5 stars Most accurate tank simulator for a PC, January 2, 2006

This review is from: Steel Beasts Gold (CD-ROM)
This is the most realistic M1 tank simulator for a home PC. The army has spent millions of dollars making similar systems to train tankers. As a gunner on a M1A1, serving in Iraq, I can say that Steel Beasts has no equal. I use it to train new soliders on gunnery. I can use it to train them on the main sight, emergency sight, with no fire control system, LRF. The Thermals are the most real I've ever seen. I wish my thermals on my tank were as clear. You can truely identify a t-72 from a t-80.

The one downfall of the game is controling battles. Its hard to fight a tank battle and control a brigade size element, all under contact. This causes you to leave the tank and fight the battle on the map.

The tutorials are great, but there needs to be some tutorials on controlling battles. Its ok if you know alot about different vehicles and capabilities. But if you don't know say, send a M113 to a tank battle. If you play this game, make sure you do a bit of research on the vehicles. Play the first mission, where you can just drive around and move all the vehicles. I use this to allow new soldiers to look at different vehicles in thermals.

Great game- reccomend it to everyone, especially 19K's

5.0 out of 5 stars Army tanker thinks..., November 29, 2003

this game is an absolutely incredible, phenomenally realistic holistic simulation. Holistic? Yes, this isn't a single POV or map fixated game, it was designed to afford the user an opportunity to be completely immersed in the action, just as you would be in the military (without the horrible food and lousy pay). SB is complicated, but therein lays its realism. For instance, the Army/WestPoint didn't choose SB to train armored soldiers because it was simplistic and hollow. What all users will discover are great in-game tutorials and wonderful online community to assist you in both mastering (good luck) and (most important for you) enjoying SB. I won't deceive you, SB can be extremely frustrating - my brother, a real life OH-58D Kiowa pilot couldn't "make it happen" and gave up. But my buddies and I, all tankers, are in-love with SB. Once you get a feel for the rudimentary controls you be addicted. Make sure you go online and design and/or download upgrades, ask questions on the very active forum, join online games, and so on. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tank mechanic talks about realism., June 5, 2004

This game is without a doubt the most accurate of it's type. I've been an Army mechanic for 6 years, and I've worked on, and fired the M1 series of tanks many times. It just doesn't get any closer than this. All operations are recreated perfectly, even the way the turret drive system works. For hardcore sim fans, this is the one.

After serving on M1 Abrams this game comes closer than any simulation game that I have ever seen. It's almost as good as being there! It's a HEAVY METAL PLAY GROUND!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool Tanks, but where are the Gunner and TC positions for the Bradley?, April 5, 2006

I love this game! The only thing that could make it better would be allowing the player to sit in the TC and gunner positions in the Bradley, as a Bradley crewman I served in Iraq, it bothers me that I can't play my Bradley to its fullest potential.
