If you're a shameless eightieshead like me, it can be hard finding music from the era that isn't already played out. There definitely was a "sound" to the new wave era and when I hear it, it immediately takes me back to Pac-Man, Atari 2600s, and the first blush of an obsession with pop culture. But there was so much good music coming out then, some of it was bound to fall by the wayside. Exhibit A: Steel Breeze. I've never forgotten the big single, "You Don't Want me Anymore" with its hooky synth line and Springfield-esque guitar sound. It was a Top 20 hit, the band played on THE showcase of the time, "Solid Gold," the song ended up on a K-Tel compilation and then...silence. Steel Breeze dropped off the radio and seemingly the earth. You knew their records weren't going to show up on CD in the early days of the format. By then, they were long gone. Thank heaven for 80s nostalgia. I'm glad to say, 80s Nation, that this record ("Record." Quaint, huh?)sounds unabashedly like 1982. Great keyboard hooks, angular guitars, melodies (remember those?). In other words, an album made with the idea that people would be listening to it, so maybe it oughtta be enjoyable. I felt 20 years younger playing this album. It's brand new, yet familiar. And to think I nearly bought The Killers album to get that feeling. Is every track a homerun? Of course not. Should that deter you? Of course not. To sum up, it's like I was telling my wife as I tried to explain this album, This isn't full-on new wave, but it is what pop music sounded like in 1982 and the new wave influence couldn't help but creep in. Hey, we all have real lives to go back to tomorrow. Tonight, there's no harm in getting "Lost in the Eighties," to crib a line from the Breeze boys.

By the way, consumer alert. The CD won't play on my old Sony DVD player. But, it's a tempermental old thing and the disc plays fine everywhere else I've tried.

The album Steel Breeze, by the band Steel Breeze is all up tempo. There are no ballads here. This is what I call a "convertible album." It is perfect for top down driving, stereo blasting and taking on a twisty road. The band's sound is almost the feel of the early 80's arena rock, but the sound is not too big or overblown. Steel Breeze's most known song, `You Don't Want Me Anymore' starts the album off with a classic `80s keyboard fanfare. This sets the tone for the whole album. While you won't find anymore commercial hits here, there still some very solid songs. The last track, Street Talknin' is an interesting diversion. It has a slight calypso feel to it.

This really is a good album, although it is kind of dated. But if you liked 80s new wave rock, it's for you. One thing no one has mentioned is that there is some fantastic guitar playing on this album. I'm talking hot leads that would rank up there with Eddie Van Halen or early Malmsteen as far as technique. Particularly on "Lost in the 80's".
