Editorial Reviews

''Making this album was a real kick for me!! Nostalgia is especially meaningful when it applied to Hawaiian music, so I thought it would be good to show how steel guitar sounded in the "old days"; those times before the revolutionary introduction of electric guitars then to the first electric and into modern sounds, and stylings. The old National, German silver resonator guitar was the steel guitar in the 20's and early 30's, being designed to make the instrument louder by using resonator cones, etc. The first steel guitar I ever heard was one of these played by a Hawaiian in a tent show that came through my home town in Ohio. I never forgot it and that same plaintive sound lives again in this album. In order to keep the sound pure and authentic, all instruments in the band were acoustic and they were played by some of Hawaii's finest:''

I wore out two copies of the vinyl before this CD came out. It isn't often acknowledged, but I think that this is actually Byrd's best. It was recorded after he moved to Hawaii, with Hawaiian sidemen. JB plays a variety of Hawaiian guitars including his gorgeous double neck Sho-Bud, a "frypan" lap steel and a resonator acoustic. The music is so authenticly beautiful that it might bring tears to your eyes. His rendition of "Sand" is permanently etched on my brain - perfection!

I've heard most of the steel guitar albums out there, and this one is in my top 3, along with Buddy Emmons' black album and Lloyd Green's "Revisited". It doesn't get any better than this in my opinion.

Jerry Byrd is iconic and the benchmark of the Hawaiian style of non-pedal steel guitar and would recommend any of his musical works for someone who wants to "Learn the stuff"!!

A steel guitar tour de force from Jerry Byrd. Benny Kalima (uke) and Atta Isaacs (slack key guitar) are among backing players. All instrumental, but varied tempos are included. I like slow numbers best. The way he finesses the steel on Hanalei Moon is a model of restraint and subtlety. Wish it were longer, but an essential album nonetheless.
