Book Description

January 4, 2008
A photographic showcase of the heyday of the steel industry

In the first half of the twentieth century, the steel industry was the major heavy industry in the U.S. and the bellwether of regional economic might. Today, the remnants of the steel industry are rapidly disappearing. The once giant mills that employed thousands are slowly decaying or have been torn down.

This decay and decline has attracted numerous photographers, and a number of books have been published highlighting the rusting hulks of a once-proud industry. However, instead of photos depicting an industry in decline, the images in Steel Remembered show the steel industry at its zenith, when it was the standard by which all other industries were measured.

Selected from the LTV Steel Collection donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio, after LTV's bankruptcy in 2000, photographs were chosen for their artistic quality, their importance in explaining industrial processes, and for their human interest. In preserving historical images from independent companies later purchased or taken over by LTV, the collection also provides a striking visual genealogy for LTV Steel.

Photographers and those interested in the history of the steel industry will find this book an invaluable addition to their collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars History Remembered...., February 20, 2008
This review is from: Steel Remembered: Photos from the LTV Steel Collection (Hardcover)
If you are a photographer, photography buff, LTV retiree, history buff, or 4 year old boy, this is the book for you. As a photographer and history buff, I enjoyed pouring through this book and viewing all the photographs from back in the day. The author really seemed to care about the content of the book and included some amazing photographs from the LTV Collection. It had the feel of the old Farm Bureau Admin Photographers.
I also loved reading the history behind the photos and the book. The writing was good and the history informational.
My 4 year old son loved pouring through the photos in the book. The trains, boats, and steelyards were definitely attention catchers for him.
And my favorite part of the book is the front cover. The dark ominous steel yard photo is perfect for such an amazing bit of our history here in Ohio. It also made me feel upset that so much of our steel industry is out sourced now. That so many people have lost their jobs etc.
This was a great book and I definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars My memories - 30 yaers, March 19, 2009

This review is from: Steel Remembered: Photos from the LTV Steel Collection (Hardcover)
As an employee of LTV steel for all 16 plus years it existed the pictures of Cleveland were interesting. Some of the names were of people I remember well. The origins of both sides of the mill in Cleveland were as I remember hearing and seeing them at company meetings and pamphlets. I was at Republic (Corrigan/McKinney) prior to LTV being formed and spent some time at the old J&L (Otis) plant also. I have some of the old in house news pamphlets and this goes well with them. I could only wish there were more pictures from the years I was there. Thanks for the memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book, October 20, 2010
This review is from: Steel Remembered: Photos from the LTV Steel Collection (Hardcover)
This is a must-have book for industrial photography fans. It shows the kind of locations I tried to photograph before getting stopped by security. Steel Remembered eloquently captures the gritty drama of behemoth machinery, but also the faces of Steel, the workers. The miracle story of how these photos were saved is worth the price alone, and the glossary is a plus. Being of a certain age, I lived my childhood on Cleveland's West Side, and I remember wondering at the orange glow that lit up the sky at night from time to time. I later learned it was when Republic and J&L were purging vessels, like those shown here. Black and white, the play of light and shadow, these photos are evocative and will strike a chord in anyone who lived or worked in a steel town or simply acknowledged the architectural magnificence of these structures and machines.
