3.0 out of 5 stars Let's not get too excited, boys and girls.
I purchased this (expensive) cd primarily based on the preceeding reviews and from seeing Savoy Brown at the Chicago Blues Festival. This is an average rock & roll/ blues cd at best. There is nothing remarkable about the cd- it has decent songs and guitar work but that's about it.

This album is definitely the one to get if you are a Savoy Brown fan. Kim does the singing on all songs like he has done in the past on some of the albums and most of the writing. Kim has a good voice and it definitely gets better each time--combined with excellent guitar work and his band. This one I picked up and have not taken it out of my car cd player for two weeks. I have seen Savoy Brown over 10 times in the last 35 yrs or so and I can say that this album is one of their best! I have every one of their albums and they all are good--add this one to your collection at once. Excellent blues rock--the Kim Simmonds way--is there any other way? I do not think so. May they rock on forever-----

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Piece of Work, March 13, 2007

I have been listening to Savoy Brown since the Hellbound Train days. It is just great when fine musicians, survive, continue to work and grow. Steel is a mature masterpiece from Kim Simmonds and the fine musicians he has always kept around him. The album is clean, rocking, and it always stays deep in the blues. Very impressive work. Keep it coming Kim.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kim Simmonds Does It All, August 28, 2007

This review is from: Steel (Audio CD)
Original Savoy Brown Guitarist continues to produce good quality recordings, if not as inspired as the band's heyday in the late 60's and early 70's. The difference here is that Simmonds has finally committed to being the band's lead singer in addition to his roles as songwriter and guitar hero. Although no one would mistake Kim for Robert Plant, like Clapton, Simmonds, is a reluctant singer who has grown more comfortable in his new role and his voice has added a little gruff as it ages.

Steel is probably Savoy's best album in quite a few years. Simmonds voice sounds better on some cuts than others. Monday Morning Blues, Crying Forever, and Daybreak are outstanding cuts and the rest is good too.
Overall this CD is a little heavier and more rock oriented than other recent efforts. The biggest flaw is that it's a little too short by modern standards-just over 45 minutes. I would have liked to hear more-perhaps a bonus Live cut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Savoy Brown-Steel, November 29, 2008

Kim Simmons still has it. Different people in the band, and it still has the flavor and style of the original Savoy Brown.

5.0 out of 5 stars kim simmonds, the best of the british blues, October 21, 2008

This review is from: Steel (Audio CD)
i discovered savoy brown on their first album 'shake down' in 1967, and have been a huge fan ever since. through all the line up changes, some better than others, i have been a fan. 40 plus years later they are still going strong. any fan of the band knows what i'm talking about. i just want to thank kim for all the great music throughout the years. i've been lucky enough to meet kim on numerous occasions and hung out back stage with the band. this cd shows that savoy brown is still the greatest blues band of all times. thanks kim.

I just got this c.d. today, and it is excellent. Reminds me of his work from the early '70's. Guitar howlin' like the wolf. Vocals kicked back and rockin'(Simmonds does the singing through out on this one). Great line up. I have always thought that the 5th star should be reserved for the bands earlier offerings, but aside from Simmonds doing his own vocals, if you didn't know better, you may well think this one came from that era. Kim really gets to the point and shows off his guitar work in a way that may have been missing from some of his more recent releases. This is a high energy blues/rock showcase. I would love to supply you with a list of the best songs from this release, but I would have to list each one. They are all fantastic! New fan, old fan, buy this c.d. You will not regret it. Hey Kim, thanks for keeping the dream alive!...and thanks for this treat.
Tom

I have been a Kim Simmons fan since there was a Savoy Brown. I saw the band in the late 70's here in our little East Texas town. They were great then and they are still great today. I loved this CD. (sorry 5 stars are reserved for Beatle music) I like Kims vocals on this, a great vocalist is not needed for his kind of blues, he nails this one right on the head. Don't waste any more time readin and buy the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great uncomplicated blues, July 10, 2007
This review is from: Steel (Audio CD)
I heard Monday Morning Blues on XM and I decided I had to have this one. I love the straightforward, uncomplicated , rockin' blues. Frankly, I was surprised at how good the album is. I don't understand the less than great reviews. If this isn't good music, then what is it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not great, July 7, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Steel (Audio CD)
This CD does not represent the true Savoy Brown, primarily because it is a studio production. The only way to enjoy the true hard edge English R & B that Kim Simmonds is famous for is to see him do it live.

There are some good cuts on the CD,but as a whole the CD is fairly "vanilla". For my taste, a little slide guitar goes a long way, and there is a lot of slide on the CD. There is some blues, and its pretty good, but pales in comparison to what Simmonds is capable of doing. Perhaps that's the disappointment for me in this production.

For died in the wool fans, recommend you buy it for the 3-4 good cuts on it, and because there are so few English R & B rock masters, as Simmonds clearly is, left and active.
