the US industry survived after 1983, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Steel: Upheaval in a Basic Industry (Hardcover)
The book sounds an alarmist tone about the US steel industry. But in mind when it was written. 1983, coming off a recession where unemployment almost hit 10%. It has favourable analyses of the Japanese steel mills. Pointing out that they have better productivity. Indeed, there is an extensive discussion about sources of productivity growth.
But after 1983, the US steel industry managed to stumble along. And mini-mills did quite well. The book only has a brief mention of these. They were not that significant in 1983. Plus, after 1989, the Japanese economy walked into 15 years of stagnation. Those Japanese mills didn't do so great then. So one way to read this book is as a view of when Japan was able to make a last, sustained bull market.
