Customer Reviews

This keyboard works very very well for gaming and the keys are very responsive.
Simon
And while the many macro keys are certainly of use in games, you can also program them to do all kinds of other useful functions in other types of software.
James Fields
After brute forcing the drivers and profiles from the SteelSeries software off my computer, and reinstalled, the hardware worked.

This keyboard looks awesome. There's no denying that. The colors look fantastic in low lighting and make gaming even better. I only really use the laptop for playing Guild Wars 2, for which is it great. Plenty of programmable keys for skills, utilities etc. The raised dots on the W key are very useful as well. Its quick and very responsive. The keys feel secure and well made. I love the big space bar for gaming, I sometimes miss when playing on a normal keyboard so it comes in handy.

However, there are some very annoying faults. The layers is a nice feature, especially if you play multiple games, but every time you turn your computer off and back on it forgets them! You have to unplug and plug back in the keyboard for it to remember your macro keys and the layers you set up. It gets very frustrating starting your game, pressing the macro keys and getting nearly killed because you forgot to unplug and plug back in your keyboard. The engine itself is a bit temperamental as well. It takes a long time for it to come up after launching it and it is pretty slow when moving between the colors and settings etc. There's also the problem of some of the lights not coming on when you start your computer up. Whole sections don't light up and you have to unplug and plug back in the keyboard for it to remember to light every section up. The fact it came with a tiny instructions book that had no actual instructions might not bother some people. However, it took me and my husband a good half hour to figure out how to set the keys to work for Guild Wars 2. We aren't familiar with gaming keyboards so it may not bother people who use them frequently.

Despite all the problems and hassle with this keyboard, we aren't sending it back because we are in love with the looks of it.

I had a Logitech g-15 keyboard which I have loved. I like a gaming keyboard so I jumped at the chance to try out this one.

I am NOT a gamer. Not much. That said, I use and abuse some macros on a keyboard. I webmaster. I code. I post online - a lot. I sell online. I enter contests. For all these things, I have found great use in having a lot of macros available.

I find the macro layout on this keyboard a lot more intuitive than on my logitech, and I love that it is designed to have 4 'layers' which are easy to toggle. The buttons L1-L4 are at the top - each denotes a layer. You can color code EACH layer however you want with an amazing number of colors to pick from. I found that very useful when I was setting up my macros to help me quickly get acclimated to the keyboard. That learning curve is really up to the user. For me, it's because I quickly filled up every macro slot I could and had to remember where I had what. They keyboard itself is very easy to use.

That said, the software is GREAT. I love that I can cut and paste snippets in to form my macros, and I don't have to type them in 'blind' and record them. For instance, one thing I set up was a blank listing that I can enter measurements into, which was a rather long snippet that I use in my clothing auctions, but it worked great and it was nice to be able to see it in case I had a typo, and I was able to cut and paste it into different buttons and alter it just a bit for different clothing items.

Also great is the extra usb plug - this helps you power the usb slots IN the keyboard, which I love.

The SteelSeries Apex RAW has the important features of the Apex, but at almost half the cost because it leaves the extras behind. So, if you want the true ultimate, go with the full version. If you want to save some money and still get an awesome keyboard, the Apex RAW fits the bill. The differences between these two keyboards are:
1) The Apex RAW has white backlighting (adjustable levels) while the Apex has is customizable with 16.8 million colors in 5 different zones on the keyboard.
2) The Apex RAW has 17 macro keys, while the Apex has 22.
3) The Apex RAW has 2 layers of macros, while the Apex has 4.
4) With the Apex RAW you access the media keys (volume, brightness, control media, etc.) via the SteelSeries key, while with the Apex you have dedicated keys for this.
5) The Apex has a braided, anti-tangle cord, while the Apex RAW does not.
6) The Apex has 2 USB ports, while the Apex RAW has none.

Two great keyboards, with a choice!

I cannot help but feel that I paid too much for this keyboard. $70 is a lot to shell out for a peripheral and, in hindsight, a mechanical keyboard in the same price range could have been a better purchase.

I bought the Apex Raw for the wrong reasons. I wanted an attractive keyboard that would match my SteelSeries mouse in design. Studying images of the Apex Raw, I thought it looked very attractive and low key and fairly compact. It was backlit I was also drawn to the concept of the double-wide space bar. The only features that met my expectations were the backlighting and the space bar. It should also be noted that I was hesitant to consider mechanical keyboards as I live with my girlfriend in a single room apartment and was concerned about noise.

My previous keyboard for several years was the wireless compact Apple "chicklet" keyboard, which is a great keyboard. However, I missed having a number pad, back-lighting, and the Bluetooth response was too slow – letters appeared on screen in short bursts rather than immediately with each key press, which also mitigates gaming performance greatly. I am planning to build a "Hackintosh" soon and won't have Bluetooth, so a wired keyboard will be essential. I decided to treat myself now and see if it helped with gaming any.

The keyboard is a nice design, but the quality of the build adds a fair bit of ugliness. The plastic is rough around the edges and looks cheap overall. The keyboard is quite massive than I would like and takes up a fair amount of space. The distance I have to spread my hands to use the keyboard and mouse simultaneously is uncomfortable and it is a hassle to constantly slide the keyboard along my desk between placement suitable for gaming and placement suitable for typing.
