"Overall though the Steelsound headphones do what they say they will do: provide an unrivalled experience in online shooters. My feeling is that if you want the ultimate setup for an online shooter you won't be able to get better than this (without spending ludicrous amounts of money)."

Like other reviewers, these failed on my after a few months with the right speaker cutting in and out. For the money you can get much better sound quality, I would not recommend these to anyone.

Let me start off by saying, for gaming i don't think there is a better headset out there. The virtual 7.1 works flawlessly and the mic on this thing is crystal clear. Its relatively comfortable, although I start to sweat around my ears around the 1 hour mark. Also if you are considered one with a small head, i might go try it on first. I have what you call a large head with some hair and i have this thing cranked all the way down. Works for me but not so sure about others.

Music - Very mediocre. i know it is optimized for GAMING but i still feel it fell short in this department. don't expect to be blown away or even satisfied if you want to listen to music a lot on headphones.

All in all its a solid headset, and is well worth the money if you are into gaming.

UPDATE:so it has been 4 days and the right side of the headphones has stopped working. i am very surprised/annoyed because i handled these things like a baby and still went out on me. i thought it was something funky with vista so i turned on the "flip sound" so the left side plays on the right and visa versa and no sound still. plugged it into a friends computer and same thing. not very happy that i spent $100 on these and they fail within such a short amount of time.

I was expecting more from this product after reading dozens of reviews on the quality you get in fps games.
I was sadly mistaken, this headset sounds awful.
VERY awful if you enjoy listening to music or pretty much anything other than games.

There is 0 bass whatsoever in this headset no matter how much you play with the drivers EQ it will not put out bass.
Sort of sounds like ipod earbuds but larger.

Their claims about positional sound with this headset all derive from the simple fact that high frequencies emit a clearer direction than lower frequencies. This modification can be done to any headset that gives you 10 band EQ adjustment. just up your treble and lower your bass and mids, now you've got better positional audio for gaming.
I hear the siberia v2 usb has decent bass, so I'd go for that set before purchasing the 5hv2 usb.

experience: 5 years playing cs 1.6 competitively and gone through around 30 headsets/sound cards in this time.

I bought these to replace a broken pair of 4H's.

These have the same sound as those, so if you're looking for something cheaper, get those. I bought these because I needed to take these apart because I move them around a lot, and I needed the braided high-quality cables because they're abused by other people.

As some other people on the internet have noted, this headset is geared towards gamers with its custom high-treble soundscape (for bullets and footsteps, which are very noticeable), so if you're more than an occasional music listener, these might not be too good for you. I hardly ever listen to music, so this wasn't a problem for me.

My title says it all. I'm honestly kind of glad they broke, since now I can invest in a better quality headset. If you do decide to purchase these, understand they this headset has 0 bass; it's mainly for FPS games. For some odd reason, the "sound card" causes a high pitched ringing sound that others can hear on skype/vent/mumble/etc, but you won't be able to hear it. It's not very noticeable, but it's annoying since you're aware that it's happening and can't do anything to fix it. This is the case for my headset and my brothers pair. The ringing goes away if you don't use the sound card, but what's the point, you payed a decent amount of money to not use it? I was never able to get the driver to work offered on the steelseries website for this headset, as others had this same issue. I used the default windows USB PnP driver, which worked fine.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE: I had them replaced since mine was under warranty, and the right earphone in the new headset rattles. The ringing I mentioned previously was still there, even with a newly provided sound card. Customer service was good, but that's probably because they're familiar with having to replace their products.

Bye steelseries.

I first bought a SteelSeries 5H V2 headset in mid 2011, and was initially quite happy with it. It had good audio, a very comfortable fit, and a well-designed retractable microphone. I was very satisfied using it for four months... and then the right earpiece stopped working. I was pretty upset at this durability issue, and had to retire the headset.

But I had been so happy with the rest of the performance that I ultimately wrote it off as a fluke, and put another 5H V2 on my wish list, and received another one as a Christmas present. Again, it worked really well... for a month. At the time of writing, 5 weeks after Christmas, my new 5H V2 had just broken, once again losing sound in the right earpiece.

This kind of terrible durability is just unacceptable. I use my computer accessories pretty lightly, and I expect a good headset to last at least a few years. Instead, I had my first headset break in four months, and when I made the error of getting a new one, it broke in only 5 weeks. That it should break so quickly both times I bought it is a clear indicator that this headset just isn't built properly.

It pains me to give this product one star, because it's a pretty good headset when it's working properly. Normally I'd give something like this a three-star review, saying it was good but with a caveat that it has maintenance issues. But you know what? A product that performs well is useless if it can't maintain that performance consistently. I paid $80 for a high-end headset, and I expected it to last me for a while. For all its virtues, SteelSeries has made a crucially flawed headset here, that just isn't suitable for gaming or serious audio usage. I can not in good conscience recommend such a flimsy product to anyone, under any circumstances. As such, I give it one star out of five.
