I'm currently on my second Cataclysm mouse and shopping for a permanent replacement. I'm not the least bit excited about finding an alternative because despite its setbacks, I absolutely love using this mouse in game and I have no idea how I'm going to adjust to a mouse with fewer buttons. I play a tanking class in warcraft and the numerous buttons at my fingertips make it exceedingly easy to adapt to the gameplay during heroics and raids.

My issues so far:

First off, the presets for the mouse are stupid. I don't need a special hot key on my mouse to open my bags, check my guild, or bring up my charecter screen... I do those actions maybe once or twice a day and I have no issues with going to a menu for that. I personally want my 17 buttons to be all for combat and vent controls that I can easily bind with my Bartender UI. However changing the settings to do that was a pain, and my second issue.

The Steelseries UI won't let you just re-assign a mouse button to a letter, or a number. So if you want mouse button number 14 to actually be the letter "P", you have to scroll through a list of "Actions" until you find "Open Spellbook" (which in warcraft language equals the letter P). If you're using this for anything other than Warcraft, or maybe you don't know that there's a letter bind for checking your PVP currency, the process can get really annoying. However after I had that all figured out, and the mouse was now bound to letters that I could re-assign to combat bars... I fell in love with it.

Until lastly, issue three. For some unknown reason, my mouse loves to lose tracking and go into these 5-6 second seizures on my screen. The best way I can describe it is that it looks like the cursor is in a paint mixer and violently shaking up and down.

I am a Warcraft player, it is my only game, so this was attractive. It said it works on Mac, so I thought it was worth a try.

OK, first I have very large hands and the mouse is comfortable for me. I have no idea why this was designed so big, it is by far the largest mouse I have ever seen, for any purpose. Button positioning is excellent for me requiring light keypresses and very responsive. It is a very good looking item, and the packaging is excellent.

Are the Steelseries designers Mac programmers who have any idea how to create a proper mouse interface on a Mac? Absolutely not. The Mac software they asked me to download is an Application, an interface port from Windows lacking ANY functionality except the interface itself....that's right folks... IT DOES NOTHING, just looks like it does.

For instance, when I opened the box I wanted to play with the LED colors on the mouse, and there is what appears to be the LED color selector panel, where you can change the color, brightness and pulsing speed of the mouse. Only problem is it did NOTHING on my Mac. I go to Steelseries support FAQs and I find:
_____________
Q: I'm using a Mac, why I can not change illumination, CPI, or polling rate settings on the WoW Mouse?

A: At this time Mac users will only be able to access default sensitivity and default illumination settings. You have full button and macro integration in World of Warcraft and the standard mouse buttons still function outside of the game. Full customization settings will come in a later version update.
___________

Great, so your Mac software was not only an application ported from Windows, it is currently incomplete, no let's make that TOTALLY non-functional and you started shipping anyway, and you freely admit that.

I love the idea of a mouse that WOW will see in-game and allow me to bind all my keys to particular buttons on the fly (inside the key bindings page). Also, macro creation was a snap for me. However, the one MAJOR drawback is the sheer size of this thing - mouse, no, elephant, yes! Man this thing is huge. I tried, and tried, and tried to get used to it, but ultimately had to return it. My wrist and fingers were sore after an hour or so simply because I was forced to move my hand around so much to reach all the buttons. Not to mention the fact that the mouse never felt "right" in my hand - meaning, I could never really get comfortable with it. In those times when I needed quick reactions and button clicks I always seemed to lag simply due to its size and my inability to get comfortable with it. Great idea, I wish Blizzard would allow other manufacturers the same opportunity to interface with WOW, but the thing is simply too large to make sense. Not to mention those times when you just want to surf the web - forget about it. I went with the Logitech G700 which is the size I am used to and has plenty of buttons. Of course, keybinding is tougher since you need to assign the keys outside the game in the mouse software and then copy that in WOW, but now that I am done it runs sweet. Good luck to those of you with Andre the Giant-sized hands - this mouse is perfectly suited for you (although it still may be a bit big!)
