Think chair

Blue Think Chairs
Think.

The chair with a brain and a conscience. A chair intelligent enough to understand how you sit, and adjust itself intuitively. A chair thoughtful enough to measure, and minimize, its lifelong impact on the environment. It’s almost as if the chair could think.

Think before you create.

Think is the brainchild of three disciplines. It has the clean, sophisticated aesthetic the designer hoped for, the technological intuitiveness the engineer desired and the complete sustainability the environmentalists sought.

Think comfortably.

Think senses what your body needs, then delivers it. Each flexor in the backrest is individually contoured to provide optimum support for that area of the back. Now that’s smart comfort!

Think intuitively.

Because the seat is weight-activated and the back moves with your body, any body can get comfortable. There are a few manual adjustments, but they don’t require a manual to explain.

Think globally.

The Think chair was developed by an international team, and is manufactured in North America, Europe, and Asia. It’s available around the world, but it’s perfectly at home at your desk, wherever you are.

Just make certain you try out an actual set of chairs at a Steelcase dealer to find out what upholstery combination works for you.

It is interesting reading the negative reviews on this chair. Two very large reviewers hate the chair because it does not fit them. I worked in Biomedical Engineering for 23 years. Those reviewers fall into the range far outside the realm of furniture design at 99 percentile and above. Most office furniture is designed to fit from 5 percentile females to 95 percentile males or 90% of the USA population. I am sure they find many cars that do not fit. I do because I am near 6'-4" tall. I even had to order a custom built Volvo one year to get one without a sunroof. Another negative reviewer hates the padding and material. The padding and covers come in dozens of combinations, all of which can be changed. Yes a leather seat cushion would be sticky. Replace it with a mesh breathable cloth cover. Add another 3D mesh cushion layer for example for more padding. The Think chair is the best of all ergonomic chairs on the market for users inside 5-95 percentile. I have tested all brands up to $2,700 per chair. It lacks a few features like forward negative and backward tilting seat cushions or continuously adjustable back tension. As a task chair for a computer user who keeps their posture correct with back straight and forward balance neutral, it is great. If you tend to slouch in an office chair like a lounge chair, then a cushy leather executive chair is better suited to you. If you suffer circulation cut off in your legs, then barring any blood pressure issues, you need to change the seat height to adjust the seat contact with the ischial support bones in your rear end. The 3D open mesh back option prevents any sweating. Some chairs come with leather and fabric with limited venting.Read more ›

I purchased the Steelcase Think for my computer desk in my apartment. I tend to spend hours at a time at my desk, and with previous chairs, I encountered numerous lower back problems. Let's face it: I don't sit with perfect posture all of the time. The Think remedies that for me by providing ample support and adjustments to cater to my body shape and make proper posture more comfortable.

The chair was designed for comfort, and in most respects it provides an unparalleled level of such. The flexors allow the seat and back to conform to your body, providing outstanding support. The edge of the seat is angled downward, so there is little pressure against my thighs and my legs don't fall asleep. I ordered the model with the adjustable lumbar, and it's done wonders for my lower back. I no longer get stiff when sitting for extended periods of time.

The adjustable armrests are a godsend, not just in that you can adjust their height but also in that you can effortlessly alter their width, depth, and angle. With them, I can type longer, and stress on the wrists is reduced. The armrests are my favorite feature of this chair by far.

There are several other adjusters on the chair. First, there is standard height adjustment with about a foot of range. Second, a lever under the edge of the seat, similar to that in an automobile, allows you to move the seat forward or backward over a range of about six inches. Lastly, there is a knob with four settings that alters the way that the seatback reclines. It allows for normal resistance, increased resistance, half-reclining, and no reclining. Unlike most chairs, only the back reclines and not the base nor the armrests. I've heard complaints that this causes some people to slide forward over time, but I've encountered no such issue.

I bought this chair on the basis of all the glowing recommendations from other purchasers. As others have stated, the chair is quite adjustable, and can be comfortable for short periods of time.

However, I am just not enamored with the chair back. I bought the adjustable lumbar support, but I cannot get it to go high enough to actually support the lumbar region of my back. The highest it will go is right at the top of my hip bones, probably 3-4" too low. I am tall (6' 2"), but I have a hard time believing that the architecture of my back is really that different from the norm. I ended up jamming the lumbar support as low as it would go, just to get it out of the way.

I absolutely despise the chair back itself. Rather than a conventional padded back, the Think Chair has multiple tensioned wires that run horizontally, covered by a thin mesh. After a few hours in this chair, these wires really start to irritate my back, because they don't distribute the pressure evenly. When sitting in the chair I am supported by only 15 of these wires, and I can feel them pressing into my back. After a while it feels like they have cut off circulation. I have resorted to placing a thick blanket over the back of the chair in hopes that it will distribute the load more evenly. I am pretty skinny, so maybe I am the problem rather than the chair.

All in all I am disappointed in this chair, and wish I had purchased something else. That was $768 not well spent.

This is simply the best desk chair I have ever sat in. I have spent 8-10 hours a day in a SteelCase Think for the last three years and finally saved up the money to put one in my home office. It is truly everything that is advertised. Not only is it perfectly supportive in all the right places, it is light to move around and it looks very professional. If you are looking for the perfect office/desk chair, look no further - You cannot go wrong with the Think!
