Not a float fishing book,
By
This review is from: Steelhead Float Fishing (Paperback)
I purchased this book to mainly study up on float fishing techniques. Since I am new to this type of fishing, I figured that it would be a good idea getting to know the sport thru professionals than random trial and error. So with high hopes of learning about float fishing, I purchased this book. Wow! What a mistake. It does not give any detailed information on float fishing specifically but instead give a very general description of steelheading in the great lakes. No real tips and tricks specifically for float fishing but just for steelhead in general. In my opinion, I did not learn anything about float fishing that I already did not know and did not learn anything about fishing the great lakes that I did not already know.
Don't buy this book if you want to learn about float fishing for steelhead. But do buy this book if you want general information about great lake steelheading and the various forms of how to fish for them. I give it one star because its title is misleading. It should read "Steehead of the great lakes".

Float fishing is the preferred method for steelhead on the feeder streams and tributaries of the Great Lakes during the fall and spring steelhead fishing seasons. Steelhead expert Jim Butler provides a complete 'how to' introduction for novice anglers in "Steelhead Float Fishing" that includes the history of float fishing, the aquatic behaviors of steelhead, 'reading' water, the various float fishing techniques and strategies, natural and artificial baits, float reels and how to cast them, building balsa floats, and a great deal more. A complete instruction manual, "Steelhead Float Fishing" is 'must' reading for anyone setting out in either the spring or the fall to fish for steelhead in Great Lakes country!

This book should be titled "Float fishing the great lakes" I'm on the west coast and didn't find allot of useful information in this book, the waters and gear are different. Book should be re labeled as the author states in the first chapter,"this book is about great lakes fishing"
Pretty dissapointed over all considering.

Jim's an expert steelheader, that's for sure. His book aims at beginning steelheaders who need to learn the basics.
Good photos, clear explanations, good rigging diagrams. A well-designed book. Wayne Heinz, author of, How to Catch Salmon, Sturgeon, Lingcod, Rockfish, and Halibut Along the Pacific Coast: Fish On! |
