5.0 out of 5 stars Good and getting better, June 16, 2003

This review is from: Steely Dan: Everything Must Go (DVD Audio)
Steely Dan music has always puzzled me. This new album is no exception. My initial disappointment with this new album has now been replaced with joy and wonder. How do they do that?
(Another mystery I haven't been able to solve is why everybody loves 'Aja' so much... there, I finally dared to say it)

This new album is again one to listen to forever. However, in comparison to their 70's work, I find that
- Donald's singing has really changed. Personally I don't think his singing is 'as strong as ever', as some reviewers say. The exaggerated vowels are gone, now he is actually singing, but with less power.
- there is very little instrumental "room" on this album. The sparse soloing and intrumental passages in general leave me wanting more, but that might very well be one of the many secrets of this album's lasting appeal.

It almost feels like a sin to criticise Steely Dan music, so I'll try and save my soul with a final remark:
I know now that EMG is a great album, and I think it will grow in time.

Steely Dan has always been know for their sonic excellence and this version (DVD Audio 5.1) of their latest recording takes it up a notch! You'll hear things you didn't notice in the stereo version, it's fun to listen to! And the fact that the low end is sent to the sub by design of the media (not a crossover) helps make this recording shine!

Enjoy!

Very nice album, although not to be compared to Two Against Nature. Again DVD-aduio shows Fagen and Becker's committment to perfectly polished recording and production. If you feel that you can't get enough of Steely Dan and are unfamiliar with the Nighfly Trilogy, I highly recommend it. These Three albums are in MVI format with CD copies (6 disks). MVI is wonderfull new format - It allows you to choose the the surround decoding, I prefer DTS. It also contains high resolution MP3s and video content as well as bonus tracks. If you are are familiar with Nightfly - this is a wonderfull sound upgrade - like you've never heard it before. The trilogy also includes Kamakirad (the most different of all Fagen/Dan albums) and Morph the Cat (most recent Fagen relase). GiveN that these albums are a little more than 10 years apart, they give insight to Fagen's changing perspective on life.
