I heard the author of Steering by Starlight on MPR. When she said she had overcome fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, and now was capable of doing so much more, I wrote down the title and ordered it.
People on Facebook began to discuss it too.
I love reading it and the most amazing thing is happening and I believe it is due to this book.
I lost my husband a year ago. I know we need to take time to heal from such a sudden loss and I have done that. I have sort of been a lump, doing what I need to do, actually enjoying myself, but sort of or really lazy it seems. I have always been very good at visualizing but for the past few years done little of that. I did visualize my move to Ajijic Mexico in 2007 and then it seemed to end. I know I have had an amazing life. Hairdresser to the Stars, a book available on Amazon explains that. So I didn't think I even needed to make any plans. I am 75 and just figured I would go along for the rest of the ride. I would take what ever happened day by day.
Then I started reading this book. It all rings true, but now I am feeling the results of reading it. I am beginning to imagine my future in a different way. I am a social creature and although suffering pain and the loss of most of the sight in one eye, I seem to forget all that when I am at my art class, or engaged in conversation with interesting people.
I have filled out and answered questions and those questions have brought an aliveness back to my mind and heart. I am an avid reader and know so much but this book reminded me of what I need to do at this time of my life and I am so happy to have opened it and read it. Try it, you will be so happy you did. It will bring joy to your life and get you on the road to joy. I used to be there, but lost my way. Now I am back. Thanks Martha.

I love this book! For me this book is magic. It reinforces the idea that we can live the life we want. If you feel stuck, afraid or just plain bored this book might just be your ticket.

It is not like other self-help books. Martha Beck is funny and sensitive about how truly get your life on! If you are not a self-help book fan then this might be the first self-help book you enjoy reading. One warning though, this book is written for those that believe in the magic of life.

I've now read Steering by Starlight twice through, back to back this weekend. I am already feeling a difference in what is happening around me! I am going to do Martha's recommended month of journaling and we'll see what happens next! I love Martha's writing style - it is totally down to Earth and not "social-scientese" as she discusses within... I love the personal stories - both her own and some of her clients (their names are changed to protect them). I love her sense of humor! Can you tell I loved the book!?!

Martha was a wonderful speaker when I saw her at The Women's Conference 2009 last Tuesday, Oct 26. Her book is just as great!

Martha Beck's book is so great that we sent it to my sister as a gift. Martha Beck has a talent for humorously getting to the guts of the pain of an unfulfilling life and give you the faith and courage to go about finding your North Star (We actually read both books).

I was actually searching for a good diet book when I found this self coaching book. The reviews of books on nutritional approaches to dieting led me to the books on the psychological aspects of weight loss which led me to the awareness that a happier, more fulfilled me is going to need less food to fill me up, which led me to this book. I have spent many years in therapy and read many self-help books and think of myself as quite enlightened when it comes to this aspect of life, but this book offered me many new insights AND most importantly very practical and useful tools. I love it and highly reccomend it. Have even bought a copy for a friend.

I second everything said by the other 5 star reviewers. This is a truly helpful book, with humor as well as insight. One of several books about finding meaning in your life and work that I've read recently. I, too, like her writing style and am envious that she is so young and knows so much that I'm only just figuring out at age 50+! Where was she when I was 20? Anyway, I think this is her best work to date.

Want to really know how to change your life for the better? Martha Beck gives practical tips for finding one's destiny and then following it - despite any fears, doubts or nagging 'conditioned' thoughts. She's funny and helpful and has good exercises for getting clear on what matters. An easy read and every page is worthwhile.

I have read this book 2x over the past few years and plan to again! The exercises are great too if you are really into self-improvement. Martha Beck's writing is very easy and enjoyable to read. She mixes in real life stories from her clients which are almost as enjoyable as her own exercises.

This book changed my life. I grew up in a very religious community, trained to follow the rules without question. There was no room for listening to the "inner voice," and I was very shy and fearful, even as an adult. I read Steering by Starlight in my late forties, and my life has improved incredibly since then.

Martha Beck's words and concepts connected me with the deepest part of myself, and helped me to discover who I really am. I almost fell on the floor when I read her description of "Spider Love" - a consumptive form of love rather than a giving, supporting love, because that's what my family of origin was all about.

Steering by Starlight gave me the courage to step forward and act on what I believe in, and the result was a lengthy process of turning the truth of my childhood into a memoir. I don't believe I would have written it if I hadn't read Ms. Beck's book. I've read Steering by Starlight many times, and I get more out of it every time I read. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels trapped or smothered in any way in their lives. This book can set you free.

If you are looking for direction...BUY THIS BOOK! Martha Beck is complete genius and this book allows the reader to be reflective and guided toward their destiny but be prepared to NOT rush through this read or you could miss the subtleties - humor, insights and Aha moments that will surprise you.
Of the two "destiny" type books she has written, this was my favorite. Great gift for a friend who is at a crossroads in life.
