5.0 out of 5 stars What a team!, April 28, 2001
This review is from: Steers & Stripes (Audio CD)
I guess this is the part where I curse Montgomery Gentry for taking away B&D's "Due of the Year" award thing. Unfortunately, I like Montgomery Gentry. The next best thing I can do, however, is to rave about B&D's latest CD. "Only In America," the first track, is a wonderful modern-day "God Bless the USA." "The Last Thing I Do," "Good Girls Go To Heaven," and "See Jane Dance" give the CD a rockin' edge. On the flip side, "The Long Goodbye," "When She's Gone, She's Gone," and "I Fall" supply the mournful side, which fits wonderfully with the others. The rest of the songs fall in between, but are no less great. "Lucky Me, Lonely You" is a little more traditional for my tastes, but hey, it's Brooks & Dunn! "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" just has a certain catch to it. "My Heart Is Lost To You" has a peculiar beat that I found interesting. "Go West" is just one of those songs that you could listen to for hours. There's nothing lacking on this new CD by masters of the industry. What are you waiting for? Grab "STEERS & STRIPES"--you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for everybody, April 18, 2001

This review is from: Steers & Stripes (Audio CD)
There's something here for everybody on Brooks & Dunn's Seventh studio album and ninth overall with "Steers & Stripes." "Only in America" may be cliched but it's still a typical Brooks & Dunn opening track as it is very upbeat. Ronnie Dunn demonstrates the range of his voice in this track as well. "The Long Goodbye" will tug at the heartstrings as it's about a couple hanging on but not knowing why. It's about delaying the inevitable. The David Lee Murphy penned "Last Thing I Do" is another upbeat track and is similar to "Six Days on the Road" in that it's a trucker song about a man who can't wait to get home to his significant other. The Spanish-flavored "My Heart is Lost to You" offers a different style of music that's a departure from Brooks & Dunn's normal honky-tonk style of country music. "Go West" finds Kix Brooks singing about a yearning to leave with his significant other and heading out west. "Good Girls Go to Heaven" is yet another upbeat fun song. The title is self-explanatory. "When She's Gone, She's Gone" is another heart-wrenching song and Kix delivers the song with a lot of emotion in his voice. "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" has been climbing up the charts and may become their next number one. Overall this 14 track collection has a little of everything found in today's country music genre. Lyrics are not included in the booklet but it says they can be found at Brooks & Dunn's official website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Country CD of 2001, August 9, 2001

Sorry Tim, the 'boys' are back in a big way. Just when Brooks and Dunn appeared predictable, they crank out their best piece of work since their debut. Great diversity in songs from the opening, extremely catchy 'Only in America' to the country-techno danceable "See Jane Dance", this is truly a collection of great tunes. Ronnie and Kix still rock out with "If It's the Last Thing I Do" and "Good Girls Go to Heaven" (Great encore tune), the killer ballads "Long Goodbye" and "Unloved", the humorous "Deny, Deny, Deny" and a fresh divergence - "My Heart Is Lost to You" with an addictive Latin flow to it. All this without even mentioning the #1 grove "Aint Nothing Bout You". Montgomery Gentry may have brought back 70's southern rock - but they can't hold a candle to Brooks and Dunn's musical diversity and vocal strength. Here's to a great tour, well-deserved record sales, and the best country release of 2001.

BROOKS AND DUNN are back with steers and stripes with 14 songs I say 7 of them will be hit singles hopefully. Kix does pretty good on this cd with GO WEST, WHEN SHES GONE SHES GONE, DENY DENY DENY, I FALL AND SEE JANE DANCE. With ronnie singing songs: ONLY IN AMERICA, THE LAST THING I DO, THE LONG GOODBYE, MY HEART IS LOST TO YOU, GOOD GIRLS GO TO HEAVEN, AINT NOTHING ABOUT YOU, UNLOVED, LUCKY ME LONELY YOU, EVERY RIVER. Considering there last album tightrope didnt really do to good with this cd they are making up for it! tracks 1,2,4,8,14 are good songs to turn up on the stereo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album., November 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Steers & Stripes (Audio CD)
Brooks & Dunn explode back into the spotlight with their great album Steers and Stripes. Here are some of the highlights from it. It gets off to a great start with their most recent #1, "Only In America", which has become an "anthem" song in country music since September 11. "The Last Thing I Do" is a great rocker. Their next single "The Long Goodbye" is a ballad destined to be a B&D classic. Kix Brooks delivers his best song yet with "Go West". If I were a DJ, I'd play that one on radio and Kix would actually get some airplay for a change. "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" has already made its tremendous mark on the charts and has given B&D their biggest hit yet, so I don't think there is anything else needed to say here. "Deny, Deny, Deny" makes for a great B&D novelty song while country's roots is revived with the great song, "Lucky Me, Lonely You". Brooks & Dunn show all indications that they aren't ready to hang it up yet with possibly their finest album since Brand New Man. If you ain't got it, you had dern well better buy it.

This is one of Brooks & Dunn's greatest albums ever. The best ones on here are "The Long Goodbye", "Ain't nothing about you" Which top the country charts for all of 2001 and their patoritac song "Only In America" should be one of the songs in memery of the Sept. 11, 2001 events in N.Y.C. They are the best duo in country music history!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kix and Ronnie earn their "Stripes"!, April 17, 2001
By

From the opening chords of "Only In America" in knew Brooks and Dunn were back to the style and energy of their debut release, Brand New Man. I work for a radio station, 94.9 the River, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and I can tell you that the listner response to the first single, "Ain't Nothin' Bout You" has been overwhelming. After listening to the album in its entireity, there are at least a half dozen singles. That is not to say, the rest of the tracks are filler. Kix and Ronnie haven't sounded this good and displayed this kind of range in years. From the danceable "See Jane Dance and Good Girls Go To Heaven" to the moving country power ballads "The Long Goodbye and "I Fall" the vocals are tight and the harmonies have that trademark B&D sound, but fresh at the same time. This is B&D's first outing with producer Mark Wright....has definately breathed life into the guys. Also of note on this album, the humorous Deny, Deny, Deny....what guy hasn't found himself in this position at least once in their lives. Their last two albums, "If You See Her" and "Tightrope" didn't see the sales numbers that their earlier releases did, hopefully this album will kick them back into high gear! Kix, Ronnie....we can't wait to see you on the Neon Circus and Wild West Tour...and if you get a chance...give us a call at KSBH 94.9 The River when you get the chance! Don't wait buy "Steers and Stripes" today!!!!

Brooks and Dunn is quite possibly the best country duo out there, and this CD really showcases their talent. The first song "Only in America" is a great driving song and should be really popular this 4th of July. I also love "The Long Goodbye" because, although it's sad, it's really beautifully written. I highly recommend this CD for all fans. I had stopped listening to country while I was in college, but these songs made me step back and listen again. :)
