excellent excellent EXCELLENT! what a set! my only problem is that penguin continues to ignore the fact that they should be printing on acid-free paper!! i don't get this? such a leading company, with amazing products, yet, how long will these books actually last before they start to deteriorate?

Although not all of John Steinbeck's great books are include, there are 6 very good choices: Cannery Row, East of Eden, The Pearl, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and Travels with Charley. The Box containing these new Centennial paperbooks is beautifully constructed, as are the paperback books themselves. This set is a must for Steinbeck Lovers/Collectors! Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Steinbeck!

I just moved to Salinas, CA when I ordered this set. I had never read John Steinbeck before, and thought this was a good time to start. Wow was I in for a treat! Phenomenal poetic language, incredible story lines, wonderful location descriptions. How exciting it is to read such stories taking place in the very settings I'm exploring now! I recommend this to others who haven't ever been here either, you may just find yourself with another destination on your "places to go list."

I purchased it to replace volumes
"borrowed" over the years and read all again, some for the first time in decades. They haven't changed and they never disappoint.
This would be a perfect gift for a young reader just beginning to build their adult collection.

Boxed up Classics? Feels like a gift idea. I've read everyone of these books, usually as library editions, and the boxed set does not appeal to me. I like a great big old well read volume. But, I give this four stars because it is a great way to give someone some of the best stuff ever written, all at once. If you like historical fiction through this time period, here is a very good read: The Silk Scarf

I bought this set as a birthday gift (for my 92 year-old sharp-as-a-tack mother). It's a beautiful set...very nicely made!

Great collection!! Everyone must read Steinbeck...my personal favorites are East of Eden and Of Mice and Men.

Frankly, I feel it would be a joke for me to actually review the works of John Steinbeck since the public has done that for over seventy years. So all I would like to review is the set of books.

It is a very good selection of the writings of Steinbeck, and I am glad to have them in my collection because I feel that his work is certainly worthy of reading more than once. Although I did read some criticism on the paper that is used, I am not versed enough in paper quality to judge that, so all I can say is the appearance is good and they appear to be well made.

I would probably bow to the judgement of thousands of readers and simply give the selection a five star rating, except for a long delay in shipping. Still, all good things are worth waiting for, so I will give the package a four star rating.

Do I recommend the set of books? Yes I do. But do not expect them to arrive as quickly as most of the purchases from Amazon. Once they arrive, I am sure you will feel they were worth waiting for.
