I don't know how many years back its been now, but not too long ago, these Steinberger Spirits got deeply discounted on the wholesale level for a couple months, right before they went on what seemed to be 'permanent backorder'. Rumors started to fly that they were no longer in production, resulting in a mini ebay panic of people trying to lay hands on one. I distinctly recall prices got higher than they're asking for a new one today.. and if they truly had been discontinued, prices would've probably gotten even uglier yet. This is one of those guitars you've always wanted but never seemed to get around to buying... Go ahead, spend the $400. The novelty value alone is worth it, but as performing instruments, they're really well made. Some people don't like the EMG Selects, but even those get a bum rap. No, you can't compare them to active EMGs, but they're fine. Obviously, these make great little travel guitars. The play well, sound good, are impressive to gig with. There's a reason you rarely see them for sale used. Most people who get one keep them. If you're the sort of person who would have an overwhelming compulsion to spend $1500 on one once they were discontinued, go ahead and get one or two now while they're still cheap.

I bought this as a travel practice guitar, so that I could easily take it with me on flights when travelling, it comes with a padded gig bag. It has exceeded my expectation in several regards. The finish is fantastic for a $399 guitar. The overall playability and feel of the guitar is as good as any I have played before. OK, so its not the original GL series from Ned Steinberger, this one was made in China. Considering the price the build quality is up there with the best for the price. The Steinberger pick ups (EMG supposedly, I am guessing Hz series as they are not the active 85's) sound good enough. They sound "reasonable" enough through an amp as well. The action was a little high for my tastes, so I had it adjusted, and now it plays well. I think that for the price, (whilst not an original), it is as good as you will find in a compact guitar to travel with. If you are not concerned with all the palaver about Chinese made, not EMG actives etc, then you will enjoy this version of the Steinberger.
