Glue works, Gun doesn't,
By
This review is from: Steinel 31132; 75mp hipur glue [PRICE is per EACH] (Misc.)
Well over a year ago, I purchased the HiPurformer kit that is overpriced at $100. At the cost of the glue tubes, they should give you the gun. Anyway, I needed some kind of super glue and this seemed like it was it. The glue does work and is excellent for trim where you really can't screw or nail or air nail. Problem is, the gun no longer feeds. I read reviews about this before I bought this kit - the feed mechanism breaks and then the whole thing is useless. The guy at the Woodcraft store where I bought my kit said that two had been returned for this problem. Nevertheless, I bought the kit and it worked well and I didn't force the plunger. A year later, it doesn't feed. The plunger works okay, nothing looks broken, but the glue doesn't flow no matter how long I let it heat up. I sent an email to the company for help but they didn't reply. So, in reality, it cost me about $25 per tube rather than the 6 to $8 they charge for it. Good idea, poor execution. Go for it if you don't mind throwing the whole thing away after you use it.

i had to get a plastic curtain hung right away. i used this to attach several hundred feet of velcro stripping. it was ready for immediate use! i could attach and re-attach the velcro without worry. it never pulled off! when i ran out i used another brand epoxy glue which took until the next day to set. the gun heats up quickly. i have stored and re-used a tube without any problems. good to have available for rush jobs, etc. but not for every day. cost is the limiting factor, not performance.

I am a trim carpenter and I was leery about using this product for professional applications, but was proved wrong instantly. I needed to twist hand painted crown to match the sheetrock ceiling and keep the same reveal on the cabinets..with no nails. I used this product and was amazed. If you are familiar with a caulk gun, you will have no trouble using this product. I was worried about the reviews concerning the glue going bad after two weeks, but I used it up on many things that I wanted to use no mechanical fastsners on. I am sold, possibly not for the little job if the compliants about the life of open glue are true, but worth every penny to me. I had to break one joint with a hammer and ended up splitting the wood...after it set up for twenty minutes. This stuff is for real.

I have tried to use this extensively for about one year. I have spoken several times to the company about defective glue cartridges that heat up but do not flow. Approximately 50-60% of the cartridges prove to be defective. They shipped me box of new cartridges but over 50% of those were defective. They later offered a new replacement model at a 10% discount, but given their admission that the gun was defective should have prompted a greater discount or free exchange on their part.Additionally, the joints are not nearly as strong as using any of the other Titebond glues. A serious amateur carpenter, and certainly a professional carpenter should wait until this product is improved. Presently it is defective and clearly a work in progress.

Works, but expensive,

This 'glue' works well, but is way too expensive. I had two prior tubes dry up to where they couldn't be used anymore despite the fact that there was about 50% left in the tube. And I always put the cap back on when it's still hot and always squeeze out a little extra to get the air out. All in all, you'll probably find this whole system to be way too expensive unless you have a large project where you can use up all the tubes of glue prior to the tubes clogging up. If you need to store a used tube for an extended period of time then it'll probably be unusable when you need it.

I bought two of these guns for an installation in New York where I had to assemble double thick shelving panels on the site. We used the longest set time...I think it was 90 seconds, and alternated guns to get enough of the glue down fast enough to have time to adjust the assembly. For this they were indispensable and I would invest in the glue if I had to do it again. That said, they don't make any sense at all for occasional use. the glue comes with a stamped date and a shelf life of a few months. Once the tube is opened or if it goes beyond it's date, the glue tends to harden near the spout. You can push a drill bit up into the tube to free it up and sometimes it works, but more often than not you end up throwing the tube out. The guns are so cheaply made that if you need more pressure they just crap out. I just threw out my last cartridge and came looking for more, but at $9.00 for one (should be for 4) it's a ripoff..

Good at its niche but not a glue for everything,

I've been using the HiPURformer system for a few years now. As others have complained, the feed mechanism on the gun is somewhat fragile and limited in the amount of force it can exert on the glue cartridge. Even when tightly capped, opened glue cartridges are only good for a few weeks and then will begin to cure in the tube, rendering them useless. Another problem is that since these tubes aren't sold that often, it is easy to find expired glues on the shelves at retail shops. To make matters worse, some (but not all for some reason) of the cartridges display the expiration date in "Franklin format" - an internal company code that is difficult to make sense of.Where the system excels is when running trim with large moldings, especially outside miters. I find the WW30 sets too quickly to be useful but the WW60 is just about right. The MP formulas have their place but I typically will use other adhesives such as epoxies or CA glues when immediate bonds aren't needed. I did speak with a Franklin tech a couple years ago and he told me they were working on a re-design of the gun. Obviously, that hasn't happened yet. In short, if you're a trim carpenter you'll find this pretty useful. But for a layperson doing one or two jobs, I'd probably pass on it and find another way.

Titebond MP75 DOES glue anything to anything,

I bought this to add reinforcement to a cam-lock style of assemble-yourself cabinet I was putting together. Basically, I just glued each edge, and tightened the camlocks. You do have about 45 seconds of open time, which is enough to get everything positioned. The surfaces being glued together were MDF and Melamine. This stuff bonds really well to both. I made a mistake, and tried pulling 2 pieces apart after 2 minutes, and no dice. A rubber mallet would not separate the 2. The one thing I have found is that you really need to make sure this stuff is good and hot for it to flow. If you put a new stick in a hot gun, you still need to let it get hot for the recommended 12 minutes, regardless of the green/red indicator light. Other than that, it works perfectly. It's expensive, but worth it if you need a good glue joint on non-porous surfaces.
