4.0 out of 5 stars Wish the range were a bit better, December 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Steinel FL300B - Dual Floodlight with Motion Sensor, Black, Energy Star Approved (Kitchen)
I installed two of these at the first point of the house that people will pass on the driveway. Unfortunately though, cars pass about 15 feet away and it doesn't really go off. Also, the range in motion of the lamps is a bit limited. The motion sensor range is pretty limited as well if you are trying to concentrate the lights in a particular direction. These would definitely work best for straight ahead motion sensing, which my application is not.

Set up was very simple and straightforward. The timer setting is great. The only problem I ran into while installing was that I mounted them on uneven stone and the plastic mounting bracket sort of bent out of shape when I screwed it in.

So far though, I would say I am more pleased with them than the one that came installed in our house, it's much less sensitive and is more accurate (leaves blowing on the ground will set off the older one).

2.0 out of 5 stars Lights don't aim easily, September 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Steinel FL300B - Dual Floodlight with Motion Sensor, Black, Energy Star Approved (Kitchen)
I purchased this item based on another reviewer's comments that Steinel was the best outdoor light on the market. The plastic housing looks study and the motion sensor works as advertised.

Some problems:
* various misspellings and grammatical mistakes in the owner's manual
* the "aim n lock" doesn't work well at all. Instructions are to pull out the light stem and aim -- you have to pull almost to the point of the plastic housing cracking to aim them. And I couldn't get the light cans to aim independently either -- so they can't point out like in the photo but rather towards one another.
* this problem is evident even on the box -- look at where the light stems connect to the body and it is evident they are pulled out a bit from the housing
* as most of the unit is plastic all the screws are meant to dig into the plastic to grip. That's bound to cause some problems if you have to open it up more than once.
* I did open the top of the unit to see how the aim n lock was supposed to work (and am surprised that this ever made it past the drafting table). Anyway the screws going into the plastic body wouldn't go in straight for 2 out of the four. Big surprise.
* the instruction booklet didn't show how to use the "x bar" to connect to a standard metal electrical outlet. It is almost like an afterthought they included it.
* the bar to connect to an outlet didn't have openings large enough for screws to fit through. Maybe this is due to a metric vs non-metric bolts that should be used?
* the instruction booklet didn't really show how to connect the x bar to the backing plate -- and the backing plate had instructions for red, black, and blue wiring. Maybe that's some sort of standard in Europe?
