Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires. From the age of five, she took piano lessons with Vicenzo Scaramuzza. In 1955 she went to Europe with her family, and received tuition from Friedrich Gulda in Vienna; her teachers also included Nikita Magaloff and Stefan Askenase. What can I say? Trying to describe the artistry of Martha Argerich with mere words is a losing proposition. It's like trying to describe your overall impression of Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon. The task is bigger than your tools. Don't pay attention to anything I have to say, shut up and LISTEN!
All of this material is available on other CD's, but having it altogether in this collection gives you a fairly good idea of the astonishing range and staggering dimensions of Martha Argerich's talent. From Bach to Prokofiev, with nearly everything in between, this is a program filled with technical and musical challenges for the performer. Martha's technical gifts are so advanced, she's able to ignore all that and go directly to the heart of the musical issues: interpretation. She can focus on the details of nuance, flavoring and shading that give these pieces and their composers the depth and dimension they deserve. Argerich's Ravel is very nearly perfect. Her Chopin is extraordinary. The demands of Liszt and Brahms heel to her command like favorite pets. I would love to hear what she could do with the Rachmaninoff preludes, and maybe she'll get around to them someday. But this program is about as good as you could ask for.
A very high caliber of very rare piano artistry, indeed!
