Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A tricolored stray mutt, Stella, finds just the right home and, being quite articulate, tells children all about it . . . in doggerel, no less. Ashman’s poems, each one about a different aspect of Stella’s new life and family, are lots of fun, recalling everything from how she ended up with just the right name to how she interacts with each of the puzzling humans with whom she lives: from the brother, who plays her favorite games; and the sister, who loves to dress-up; to the baby, who Stella feels is “best when confined to its chair.” Busy, gleeful pictures extend the comedy of Ashman’s verses, with Stella, alternately naughty and nice, at the center of it all—whether grudgingly accepting the purple veil she must wear to Sister’s tea, straight-arming Pop to forestall a tub bath, or luxuriating in a tummy rub. Pair this with Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel’s Mr. Mutt (2007) for a sunny, fun-filled canine storytime. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Stephanie Zvirin

I just bought this book for a friend's pre-school aged child. He really enjoyed the book, especially since his dog's name is Stella! The book was well written. It included short and varied chapters about Stella's daily activities and relationship with her various family members.

Great book for famliy read-alouds. The rhythm of the poetry is just right, and there is a ton of humor and good common sense in this book. Many of the poems require your child to read between the lines and figure out the situation from a human perspective.

Great, great book -- your family will be inspired to make similar short poems about your own dogs.

It's obvious Ashman loves dogs and knows what makes them tick. STELLA UNLEASHED will delight children and would even make a perfect gift for a new adult dog owner. It's that good. You don't necessarily need to be a dog or poetry fan to enjoy these; they are well written and laugh-out-loud funny. Ashman captures the doggy essence with the added twist that makes a great poem. The humorous illustrations enhance text and are, well, adorable. So happy to find that rare, recent, well-written, fun! book of poetry for kids. Love this.
