Book Description

January 27, 2009

The explosion of interest in stem cell research raises a raft of controversial policy questions. When should human embryos be used to create stem cells? Should cloning be outlawed? Should egg and tissue donors be paid? Should we allow scientists to patent stem cells? Is the government entitled to a portion of the revenue from stem cell technology created with public funds? How should the regulators and courts balance the competing goals of access to revolutionary treatments and protection of the public from unknown risks?

Russell Korobkin, with contributions from Stephen R. Munzer, provides the first thorough discussion and analysis of these and other unsettled questions of law, policy, and ethics that surround stem cell science. His clear and concise description of complex problems coupled with logical and well-balanced  conclusions makes this volume essential reading for all Americans, general readers and experts alike, interested in the promise of stem cell research and the future of regenerative medicine.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'For readers untrained in the science of stem cell research, Professors Korobkin and Munzer's clear prose and straightforward explanations make the book an ideal introduction to this complex area.' Harvard Law Review 'Korobkin has not only succeeded in offering a wide array of knowledge for those interested and otherwise unacquainted with the political, legal, and ethical implications of stem cell research, but has also presented this information in a fun and exciting manner, with appeal to a variety of disciplines.' Christopher A. Riddle, Law and Politics Review"

5.0 out of 5 stars VALUABLE BOOK, February 9, 2008
As a stem cell research advocate (a California law named after my son, Roman Reed, inspired the nation's first state funding of embryonic stem cell research) I am constantly on the lookout for books which clarify difficult issues.

"Stem Cell Century" is a clear and understandable summary of key legal questions in this vital area.

Libraries, advocates, lawyers, and regular folks will find much of value here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity and Depth on the Issues Surrounding Stem Cell Research, July 5, 2008
Stem Cell Century, by Russell Korobkin (with Stephen R. Munzer), enables non-scientists and scientists alike to understand stem cell research in all its facets. The book explains what stem cells are in clear, non-technical terms, together with what scientists hope to achieve through research on them -- "the promise and the hype," as Korobkin puts it. He then describes the moral and public-policy issues involved in embryonic stem cell research in ways that those unfamiliar with such ethical and legal discourse need not fear. Quite the contrary, one comes away from reading this book with a thorough understanding of why so many people have invested so much thought in this -- and why that effort was well spent. This book is a real contribution to each of us as thinking citizens and to society as a whole as we seek to make moral decisions and public policy on this issue as intelligently as possible.
