This brief introduction to the craft of stenciling has much to recommend it. That it was first published in Australia (hence the spelling "stencilling") presents no problems for the reader, as the author recommends materials generally available in this country. Her step-by-step approach to mastering the fundamentals is easy to follow and clearly illustrated. She guides the novice from practicing on paper with purchased stencils to creating his/her own finished designs, working with such diverse media as wood, fabric, metal, and glass. Instead of a selection of "canned " projects, Malone suggests possibilities, describes sources of inspiration, and provides a great number of simple stencil designs that the reader can mix and match to arrive at unique projects. Recommended for public libraries as an inexpensive introduction suitable for both young people and adults.

Joanne Malone's stenciling book is one of the BEST for beginner's- introducing you to all the aspects of the craft, including: easy color theory(she begins by getting you to observe Nature: rocks, leaves etc. and how most everything is composed of more than ONE color. She shows how easy the stenciling technique really is(it requires few tools and VERY LITTLE paint! I'm glad I was introduced to the craft thru this book before moving on to the myrid other publications- and I highly recommend it to all beginners(as well as intermediate stencilers!).
