Each book begins with a short history of the trail and an explanation of the formation of the landscape through which it runs. Andryszewski then leads readers on a state-by-state (south to north) tour, describing the terrains, elevations, landmarks, and sites that hikers (or equestrians out West) would encounter on their journey.
