Drew's Famous Step by Step Ballroom Dancing is the best dance DVD I have seen. The name says it all, step by step instructions. Very precise, easy to understand and shows footwork for both men & women. It even has a practice section where you can see how it should look as you practice along. I hate to repeat myself but, out of all the Dance DVD's I have seen this one is the BEST for all the basics. Both my husband and I loved it. Definately worth the money.Drew's Famous Step by Step Ballroom Dancing

The DVD covers six different ballroom dances: Tango, Rhumba, Swing, Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha Cha (listed in that order on the DVD menu, although it is easier to start with the simpler dances, such as the Waltz or Foxtrot to get started). Each of the dances is illustrated with an opening sequence showing the dance and several variations. Then each dance is performed by both the male and female dancer, then together. Each dance has the basic step plus two or three additional moves. So yes, it is basic and yes, it is designed for beginners.
It is a good DVD if you are a visual learner and can learn by watching others dance. Note that there are no diagrams and the entire DVD is watching the couple give dance instruction (along with a practice session, which is the only time that music is introduced on the DVD). Three things I found to be negatives with the DVD: 1. The woman is wearing a heel-length dress which makes it difficult to see her footwork. In several instances, she lifts her dress to her knees while demonstrating the steps on her own. It would have been better for her to simply wear a knee-length dress. 2. Most of the practice steps are considerably slower than actual dance music. Because the music is not introduced until the final "Practice" section, timing and speed can be difficult to pick up. 3. There is no instruction at all on how to discern which music goes with which dance, not even a basic 3/4 count, 4/4 count, etc. This is one of the most difficult areas for new dancers is simply to understand what type of song is being played. That additional instruction would have made this DVD more helpful. This DVD will likely be too basic for anyone other than a true beginner. However, it was helpful for me to get prepared for an upcoming cruise (and yes, my wife and I are true beginners).

Good enough,

This is a good CD for people with no dance experience. You learn very basic moves. If you have some ballroom dancing, this cd is not for you. It does offer step by step instructions that are easy to follow.

Since I am a beginner, the instruction fit my needs, however this is the first time I have rated video quality as average.

This video is a wonderful learning tool. It can be used either by couples wishing to learn to dance together, or, for individuals to perfect their dancing skills. Very well done!

Frustrating and incomplete,
By AJ "Allen Whitfield" (Green Bay, WI USA) - See all my reviews

All in all this DVD is better and a whole lot cheaper then my last purchase: "How to dance with two left feet", but it is hard for me to say that I was at all satisfied even though the couple are beautiful dancers.
First thing to note: there's some actual instruction, but only from the man (the girl never talks and becomes a bit of a distraction as you wonder if she ever will). Also, the steps are taught in one direction for both the men and women and then are briefly practiced in opposite directions and this was a real pain for us. Each dance opens with a total dance that shows all the moves, however, once each move is shown from several inconsistent directions, there is no review and you do not see how to put all the pieces together. We kept arguing with each other as to what direction we were to be going in because of how often it would change on the screen. Very frustrating! |
