This is a fictional story, based on fact about the civil war and the effects it had on families living on Staten Island, NY. The book is geared to youth- teens, and up. Adults can certainly be enriched by it. I was. As with Phyllis Whitney books, one gets much good information of geographical locations....the people and the place of the settings of the book.
I highly recommend this book. Whitney takes you there. There is enough emotion for all. There is love and romance. There is sometimes fear. There are hardships to overcome. There are some family difficulties to be overcome between some members being loyal to the North- others to the south in the war between the states. I feel strongly that this would be a wonderful book for assigned reading to age groups mentioned above.

I collect Phyllis Whitney's books and this one as all the others was no disappointment. Always surprised with the ending. No blood and gore, no sexual situations but always suspense. Love it!
