Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

For those who want to learn organic gardening without authorial preaching, Ogden may be the perfect teacher. Building on the knowledge passed on by his grandfather, Samuel Ogden (who wrote the original Step by Step in 1975) and on his own years as a market farmer and seedsman, Ogden leads the reader through the process of becoming a good organic gardener. As he states in the epilogue, the book is meant for people who "want to garden without danger to themselves and without damage to the environment"; in his view, they're neither fanatics of technique nor devotees of traditional ritual for its own sake. Chapters cover planning, seed starting, compost-making and planting. Along the way to a large section on individual vegetables, Ogden gives his opinions on a variety of subjects, from pesticides and power tools to chemically treated seed and the wisdom behind crop rotation, always taking the reassuring tone of a very patient elder. His discussion of vegetable growing is filled with recommendations on varieties, as well as tips on planting, cultivating and harvesting. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal

Both of these books are complete, literate, well-organized guides to organic vegetable gardening. Without being preachy, each one presents sound philosophical and scientific reasons for eschewing toxic chemical pesticides and for working within nature to produce a bountiful harvest of delicious and nutritious food. Both books discuss garden layout, tools, composting, garden planning and preparation, cultivation, and individual vegetables. Coleman's work is directed especially at the Northern gardener, offering a wealth of strategies for extending the harvest through the winter in even the coldest climates of the United States. Coleman discusses at length crops especially adapted for winter harvests, and he offers chapters on cold frames and other covered gardening techniques, such as tunnels and root cellars. Also of note is the special attention paid to simple, ergonomic tools, often crafted by Coleman when he was unable to purchase what he needed. The section on composting is positively inspiring. Ogden has revised and updated a gardening classic written by his grandfather, Samuel R. ("Big Sam") Ogden and published in 1971 by Rodale Press. He pays tribute to Big Sam in his preface and includes, at the beginning of each chapter, a quote and a picture from the earlier book, often of Big Sam himself. In covering all aspects of organic gardening, Ogden discusses the latest developments and includes instructions returning a chemical fertilizer--dependent garden to an organic state. Through the dispensation of sound advice, both Coleman and Ogden convey their own joy in gardening; their books are recommended for all gardening collections.

I originally found this book a the local library at the beginning of this season and read it cover to cover. I had to buy one here since I wanted to keep it as a reference for the rest of this season and the ones to come.

The writing style is basically the author having a chat with you about his organic garden and covers everything that I could ask for including choosing the location, soil preparation (without chemical fertilizer), annual crop rotation, succession planting, families of veggies that grow well together, maintenance of the garden, trellising, composting, etc. I know that this sounds like a lot, but you can read one chapter or 10 and you will get the whole story on what you wanted to know. I highly recommend this book to be in the library of any gardener, organic or not.
