People Under the Stairs’ members Thes One and Double K have spent over 10 years and 7 albums taking hip-hop back to turntables, dusty grooves, break-dancing, graffiti, and rocking jams about everyday life. This is the core of what PUTS was founded on and what sets them apart from pretty much everything else out there ... Read more in Amazon's People Under The Stairs Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Epitome of The P May 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD
"Like a greatest hits album of all new material."

How do these guys keep getting better?!? I'm constantly amazed. Some 15-16 years in and they're still managing to produce some of the most aesthetically *and* technically beautiful hip hop out there.

I'm well into double-digits on the listen count (got the CD, Vinyl, and Cassette, hehe) and can safely say this is my favorite PUTS record. It's a continuation and an evolution of their sound, but it has the timeless aesthetic appeal to it that (to me) had been wavering on albums 6-8.

Now, I love every album Mike and Chris have done, but in retrospect there are only a few tracks (3 or 4) from each of those last few that I'll still throw on a mixtape or playlist for everyday listening. Especially on Fun DMC and Carried Away. Highlighter was a bit different, and I think was especially important in the evolution of their production style/technique, but I still find myself skipping tracks in a casual listening session, and the number that I skip has gone up as time has worn on. Again, don't get me wrong, I still love those albums, and if I have the time I'll listen to them all the way through because they're undeniably well-constructed, beautiful pieces of art, and technically brilliant. A year after Highlighter came out I was still recognizing new nuances in the music.

But to me, the best albums excel both as background music (the aesthetic aspect) and as intensive-listening music (the technical aspect), and, most importantly, continue to do so over the course of time. Evaluating the PUTS catalog in this manner is particularly interesting. I feel like every one of their albums has stood the test of time in one way or another, but none have like I believe 12 Step Program will.

4.0 out of 5 stars PUTS still got got it May 10, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Just sampled 12 Step Program the other day here on Amazon. Needless to say I already ordered it. This is a step up from the previous album "Highlighter" which was ok but lacked a certain punch. So far my favorite track is "LA Nights". If you're a fan of the P, cop this or download it. It's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still going strong... June 22, 2014

Another PUTS album, another solid release. Every PUTS album has been a strong release. Even if I didn't like it on the first go around (Stepfather, Carried Away), going back and listening to it later, I appreciated the album even more later. Double K and Thes One are masters of the lost art of using samples. It's understandable that you can't use samples like back in the 90's, but it would be nice to see others use it like PUTS.

5.0 out of 5 stars PUTS Keep Getting Better May 22, 2014
By Hunyadi
Format:Audio CD
Thes One and Double K continue to give us meaningful hip-hop with a message of the positive and having fun and enjoying life. The Ste. For Reefer changes beats and rhythms throughout, LA Nights drops it classical PUTS style, and the closing track Doctor Feelgood sums up the whole album. This album is progress in action from their previous Highlighter album. Each album shows how they are growing as artists and in production standards. Get a copy and you won’t be disappointed!
