Product Description

The Step 'N Tilt Lawn Aerator is very effective at alleviating soil compaction problems. This patented lawn aerator (U.S. Patent No. 8,714,275) makes core aeration easy and enjoyable for do-it-yourselfers (DIYs) and professional landscapers. Simply step on the platform to insert aerator tines into the ground and tilt the handle bar back to remove the tines from the ground - it's that effortless and easy! The Step 'N Tilt Lawn Aerator is a true core aerator, not a spike aerator. Its aerator tines are hardened for extra durability. Four tines may be used in areas with strong grass root and soft soil for faster aeration. Two tines should be used in areas with bare spots and hard soil. Core aeration is a proven lawn aeration method and the only one recommended by lawn experts and university extension services worldwide. Its highly engineered hollow core aerator tines are very effective at extracting soil cores while creating 3.4" deep, 0.75" diameter holes in the ground. The replaceable and recyclable carbon steel aerator tines are case-hardened for extra durability. Includes a soil core removal tool. Also functions as a handtruck. We ship using USPS Priority Mail from Andover, Kansas, USA. Some assembly is required.

Every time they clog you have to use the included pin to hammer out the packed in soil out of the cutting tubes.

It was easy to assemble and to use after I put it together.

I used to own two Hound Dog aerator tools. At that time it was the only manual core aerator product on the market, to the best of my knowledge. It did what it was supposed to but primarily I had two complains. Number one, soil would clog inside the tines quite often and I would spend more time freeing the soil from the tines than actually aerating the lawn. Squirting WD-40 into the tines helped only a little. Number two, I needed to physically pull the aerator tool upwards and so it needed quite a bit of work.

Fast forward several years and I saw the Step'n Tilt Aerator 2 on Amazon. I studied the pictures and the design of the tool and thought there might be something good here. I bought it and I was not disappointed. Because the tines are cleverly crafted with a telescopic design, soil did not clog inside the tines as often as with the Hound Dog. Also because of the attached wheels design, it was not necessary to lift up the aerator tool and this was a welcomed feature. Tilting the handle bar back to pull up the soil produces less stress on my back and neck. I use two tines for spots where I know the soil is compacted and tough. In areas where the soil is not as compacted, I go ahead and use four tines. Using four tines cuts the work time in half.

I am not disappointed with my purchase at all. I have spoken to the business owner on the phone and he is very kind and knowledgeable. I am sure he will keep refining his product and come up with something that will make it even more difficult for the soil to clog up in the tines. But until that happens, this product is king.

Living in Central Texas, we don't have soil so much as we have adobe. Lots of clay and calciche. To amend the soil, I had to aerate and add organic material. I could have gone the motorized route, but I wanted to have something quiet, clean and portable. I looked around for a solid, manual aerator and found the Step 'N Tilt. I admit I was a bit skeptical that this could actually work in this type of soil. But after seeing how sturdy it's built and watering my yard, this device worked great!
Granted, it does require some sweat, but that isn't such a bad thing. You can concentrate on problem areas, and you can work early in the morning without bothering the neighbors.
I was able to finish a moderate yard fairly quickly and all while being able to listen to music and not having to worry about annoying my neighbors.
I do recommend getting the version with the container, because it will allow you to remove the extracted plugs with little muss or fuss!
All in all, a great product that actually works better than anticipated!

I had an aerator that had to be pushed into the soil and pulled up constantly. My back was killing me. I couldn't afford to spend hundreds of dollars for some of the really big ones, so I decided to try the Step n Tilt. The best decision I've made in a long while. The price and the quality are great, and the assembly was so easy. Every piece fit perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone who has a small backyard and wants beautiful grass.

Step-n-tilt is arguably the best manually powered core aerator available and I have used it several times with great success. I bought the original 1.5 yrs ago and stumbled on the fact there was an updated 2013 model with 4 tines plus a clearing tool. The step plate on my original is cracked and breaking on both sides so I was considering (reluctantly) on buying another aerator. If you go to the Vibrant Yard Company website there are very affordable upgrade kits for original owners. If you don't care about the collection box (I don't) you can get a new step plate, 4 tines, plug remover, plus bolts for less than $30 shipped to your door! Only $7 more and they throw in the new collection box. I got the new parts and now my step-n-tilt is as good as new! Way better than shilling out another $70 and much cheaper overall than renting a gas powered monster from the orange or blue store each time!

Minus 1 star for the plate cracking on my original. We'll see how the new one holds up.

*update after first use*
Well the same that holds true for the original holds true for this one: your soil conditions must be perfect to use this! You need to aerate during that ideal in between of soft but not too wet soil. If your soil is even slightly dry, don't even think about it. If you have clay soil like me, I'm sorry. 4 tines to unclog is definitely an increased pain but the new tool makes this easier. I had to resort to using a hammer which sped the unclog process. Is 4 tines better than 2? Hard to say for my soil. If your conditions are ideal and you experience no clogs, then yes, 4 tines will speed you through your job much quicker. This is still the best hand-held aerator on the market but it does come with its challenges.

I just received the Step N' Tilt today and assembled it in about 30 minutes. Then I got to work aerating my lawn. Definitely mow and water your lawn a day before using. The tines went in deep and smooth on the moist soil, but maybe only halfway down on areas that didn't get much water or was just hard soil. I may have to re-do those areas with only 2 tines. It's a little bit of a workout, but much easier than I thought it would be. The lawn looked like a flock of geese had a frat party on it, but that's probably how any core-aerated lawn will look. My neighbor came out and asked "Is that poop?" A little more watering will probably help with the dissolving of the cores... I'm excited to see the benefits in the coming weeks! Nice design and construction.

Update 8/16/2014: After 2 years of using this core aerator, I can say that my lawn has never looked better. I aerate 2X a year, in the Spring and Fall, right before adding lime and fertilizer. My grass is definitely thicker than it ever has been, and previously notorious thins spots now have healthy grass growing. One note of caution, I've occasionally dug the tines into buried large pebbles and chipped the tines. So definitely pick up some spare tines, just in case.
