Book Description

April 25, 2003
A complete, comprehensive book with over 200 detailed photographs capture step by step trick sequences. Tips on what to look for in a trick horse prospect, and what to expect when training. Photo's and text illustrate potential problems so that you know what to expect, and how to handle a situation should it arise. Jackie Johnson has been training trick horses for show and sale for over 10 years. Methods are humane and use positive reinforcement as a reward - No Chains or Inhumane training practices are used, rather the training works off the principles of Absolute Horsemanship - the goal to establish trust and communication between you and your horse.

Book instructions for training: Smile, Nod Yes, Shake No, Kiss, Hug, Drink from a Bottle, Twist Front Legs, March, Stretch, Bow, Kneel, Camel Stretch, Crawl, Drunkards Shove, Lie Down, Sit Up, Pedestal, Salute, Rear and much, much more. Tricks are trained both in hand and at liberty - over 23 trick and trick combinations in an easy to read, easy to follow format, with lots of photo's for reference.

A number of horses are used in the photo illustrations (including 2 donkeys). Photo's follow the training of the animals while it happens...they do not show photos of seasoned animals, already trained.

This book is a great addition to any horse persons library. The trained maneuvers are both practical, and functional and aid the horse handler in creating a well rounded, trusting and communicative realtionship with thier horse.

About the Author

Jackie Johnson

For the past 10 years Jackie Johnson has been training her personal horses to perform tricks such as bow, lay down, sit up, rear and much, much more. She first started trick training during the long, cold winters that you can only find in Saskatchewan. The type of winter where, if you spend 20 minutes riding your fuzzy equine, you spend the next 2 hours walking him out so that he can return to the great, blizzard filled outdoors.

Over the past few years she has seen people looking for a way to develop a closer relationship with their own animals – we’d all love to have a little bit of movie magic in our own backyard. Now, Jackie Johnson (along with help from fellow trainer Brenda Sapergia) are training trick horses, ponies and donkeys for resale. They also travel with their trained trick horses (and a new Donkey addition) to public appearances and clinics so that the average horse owner can develop a more rounded relationship with their own horses.

Most recently, Jackie Johnson has compiled all of her training notes into a book called "Step By Step Trick Training". This training book will revolutionize the horse training industry.

Jackie Johnson also writes training articles for a number of magazines including; Brayer (USA), CAHR (Canada), Saddle Up (Canada),and Showtrail (Canada)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Better Relationship Through Trick Training, March 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Step By Step Trick Training (Paperback)
Received this book, read about training the bow and went right out to my horse. I have been trying to get her to HOLD the bow for about 4 months. Well, of course, your instructions worked and she understood and completely relaxed and waited while I fed her a carrot. Thank you! Thank you! Now we will be able to move on to the kneel and lie down, sit up and even rear! I think this book is great and it truely is step by step.

By A Customer
This review is from: Step By Step Trick Training (Paperback)
If you plan on teaching your horse tricks this is the book to get. I went so far as to see the actual horses that were taught using the methods taught in this book, and these horses are wonderful and very well trained!! This is a very unique book taught by a very unique trainer that really understands her animals. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and FUN to do!, September 4, 2008
This review is from: Step By Step Trick Training (Paperback)
I am training my horse to do tricks and have been using this book entirely. It is very easy to understand and has lots of tips and help with troubleshooting. Jackie goes through some of the most popular tricks with easy to understand methods. She frowns on using pain to teach a horse anything and uses fun ways to keep the horse interested.

The pictures are not the best, but the book is very well written. It is the best trick book that I have found.
