I really like the content of this book for 1st and 2nd graders. I use it in conjunction with other materials. The main issue I have with it, is the same issue I have with other books from this publisher: The lines for writing do not have that dotted line that runs horizontally between the solid lines. At this age (1st to 3rd grade), children are struggling with handwriting and learning to relatively size different letters without establishing bad habits. They really need visual cues to get the mechanics ingrained. Some of the other writing books do a great job doing this. Maybe if it was a 3rd to 4th grade book this would be ok.

When my daughter writes in this book, her writing goes all over the place, and then she finds herself with little room to complete her thoughts, so many assignments run too short. I have found myself drawing in the dotted lines, and I am getting tired of it.

I highly recommend this book as a supplement to any writer's workshop program. It provides great mini-lessons for 4 sub-areas of writing (Organization, Ideas & Content, Word Choice & Voice, and Conventions). Each mini-lesson is followed by three levels of practice, plus tips for emergent readers/writers and for more challenging extensions for GATE. Book titles that tie in with most of the lessons are given, which saved me a lot of work.

As a veteran teacher of 30 years in grades 1-3, I have found this book to be one of the friendliest resources around. I was able to teach following the easy lesson plans, the children enjoyed and learned from the lessons and activities. Each level felt successful. All-around perfect teacher resource. Kudos to the authors!!!
