4.0 out of 5 stars A present from Grandma!
My kids received this 2-3 years ago as a present from Grandma. It has held up wonderfully! Up to 4 kids fit in it just fine and the lid helps to keep out pesky bugs. The kids are able to sit on the "hands" of the crab, or IN the sand. They have also decided the lid can be used as a toy just as much as the sandbox itself! The lid has held up to being bent backwards...

3.0 out of 5 stars Could use a few improvements
This sandbox was large enough for my toddler and preschooler to play in. I like the lid because it keeps cats and debris out. It keeps flying off in the wind, though. We live in Southern California and it's not always windy, but we do get gusts and sometimes, it's windy. My husband put a brick on top to keep it from blowing off. It worked, but then the lid now has a big...

The lid has held up to being bent backwards numerous times and ridden down the hill in our backyard! I highly recommend this one - it stands up to kids and keeps the sand in & the bugs OUT!

We have had our sand box for about 3 years. It stands up to very hot temperatures and the lawn trimmer! It is very sturdy and the kids love it. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great sandbox for the buck, June 16, 2003

Wow, sandboxes can be expensive! I looked at all of the sandboxes before I bought this one. The little tikes frog sandbox was the most inexpensive one I could find, but it could only really fit 2 toddlers in it. I didn't want to spend too much on a sandbox, but didn't want to go cheap in the material as well. So I went the next step up, to this one. It is really sturdy, and my 2yr old son can sit on it's claws, or sit inside. The lid is a little flimsy, but it closes well, and I don't have to worry about "little intruders." And it can hold more than 2 toddlers so he can invite his friends over for some sun and sand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Durable!, February 23, 2005

This sandbox is a fantastic buy! We got it for my 2-year old last year, and she loves it. It's roomy enough for two or three, and the lid, though it may appear flimsy, is fantastically durable and, as long as it's fitted properly on top of the box, will NOT blow off. In fact, the second night we had it, there was a huge rainstorm with lots of wind: I thought sure there would be a big mess in my backyard, but was I shocked in the morning to find the whole box intact and nothing but dry sand under the lid! Amazing. This is a great toy, and very popular with my daughter and her friends. The color has not faded a bit that I can tell from last season.

I love this sand box. I have had it for a year and a half now. It has no fading, and the lid has never blown off in the wind. The sand stays dry and bug-free - even through the winter months! All I had to do this spring was take the cover off and throw the toys in! I get in this box with my 37 pound 2-year-old. It would fit 3 toddlers comfortably. I also use the lid to spin her around. I like the high dome of the lid, because I can store the largest sand toys inside it all season long! I put 350 pounds of sand in although only 300 was recommended, and it fit fine with room left! (I like a lot of sand) I am enjoying this sand box as much as my toddler! Very durable!

3.0 out of 5 stars Could use a few improvements, August 28, 2009

This sandbox was large enough for my toddler and preschooler to play in. I like the lid because it keeps cats and debris out. It keeps flying off in the wind, though. We live in Southern California and it's not always windy, but we do get gusts and sometimes, it's windy. My husband put a brick on top to keep it from blowing off. It worked, but then the lid now has a big dent in it from the weight of the brick.

The lid doesn't keep snails and ants out. The snails come in, dry out and die, then the ants come in to eat up the snails. So, we have dead snails and ants filling up the sandbox.

PROS:
+ good size for my preschooler and toddler to play together
+ it has a lid to keep cats out and the sand somewhat cleaner

CONS:
- the lid keeps blowing off
- the lid doesn't seal the box enough to keep out snails

SUMMARY
It's not a bad sandbox but it can use some improvements. I quickly realized it was a mistake to buy a sandbox, because I did not like the sand being tracked all over the house. But some people don't mind that. Just beware that the lid doesn't stay on well in windy conditions and snails are able to crawl in even with the lid on.

This sandbox was a hit with my 2 year old. We bought the 300 lbs of sand, but could have gone with 250 or even 200 and it would have been plenty. Each day she requests her to "go digging". We know that it will last as other step 2 products do with just a little fading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy!, April 19, 2006

My husband and I just bought this for my 13 month old son and he loves it. We went to BabiesRus to see what they have, and picked this one. It's colorful, and whimsical. It can hold a lot of sand (6 bags of sand that you can also get from BabiesRus) and will fit more than 1 child. My son sits in it, but for older kids, they can sit on the claws (there are 2 claws). But watch out when grown ups sit on the claws though. My huband sat on it and it gave a little (he is 185 lbs), so he no longers sits there. I sat on it without any problem.

The cover is great too. It covers well. We've already had 2 hard rains and no water got in the sandbox. I know this is one of the things I was afraid off from reading other sandboxes. It's awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sand and a Crab, what more could you want out of Summer!!!, June 30, 2004

I just bought this sandbox yesterday for my daughter and she didn't want to get out. It's roomy, can hold tons of sand, we put in 200 lbs, which is more than enough for a two year old. It has a domed top so you can store lots of sand toys. Based on the reviews and Step 2's reputation I know it'll last with just some fading.

This is a great buy for the price.

My 19 month old son loves this sandbox. He would play in it all day long. It is my understanding that this sandbox is larger than most of the other ones out there. I have to say I couldn't see getting one any smaller than this. Once you get your little one and a few toys in there it's pretty full. I think the smaller ones would be too small. If you plan on having more than one child play in the sand box; spend a few extra bucks and get the bigger one.
