Young Punks Rock Hard,
By Leigh Taylor (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stepa (Audio CD)
Stepa is a cool new band from the LA 'burbs, doing the SoCal alt/rock thing, but doing it very well! Their youthful energy is truly infectious--you can't help but get caught up in it. Sure the record rocks hard, but it does have its quieter moments when you can really hear that front man Blake Beckmann can truly SING. Stepa's debut was produced by Jay Baumgardner, and fits in the same category as his other credits (Hoobastank, Papa Roach, Godsmack), but Stepa still has a unique raw edge that is all their own. If it has to be compared, their music sounds like a heavier, younger, more aggressive version of Incubus.Pure and simple, Stepa is FUN music. "Aquarium" is the lead track and first radio single, and it's easy to see why--just try to get it outta yer head! Stepa has the potential to be something really big.

KORN, NIRVANA, DEFTONES, RADIOHEAD,
By J. (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stepa (Audio CD)
Stepa breaks away from our current state of nostalgia. They are musicians with a progressive sound. As mainstream rock music meshes into a similar sound (much like the evolution 80's rock), Stepa revolts. They continue a revolution started by break-through bands in the early 90's. Stepa's self titled debut can be looked at as a tribute to such greats as Korn, Nirvana, Deftones, and Radiohead. Over the past decade many of us listened, and a talented few were influenced to form bands themselves. New musicians to carry on an alternative philosophy. Stepa is made up of such musicians. I rate Stepa's debut at a four of five, but buyers beware! Stepa's sophmore album will excel. As the mainstream meshes, Stepa's significance to the survival rock music will become obvious.

Me and a friend of mine went to see nonpoint at the birch hill show. The very first band up were these guys, when they played their first song "aquarium" my buddy and i were amazed. Our jaws hit tha floor, they were full of energy that you can't deny to feel...it's like you were drawn to it. the rest of the set was great...i was like "i gotta get this cd". After they played their set my buddy and i met them...cool guys. we bought the cd and listened to it on the way home. Great cd!...when you listen to the album you can tell they have a KoRn influence, their sound too sounds alot like some old school korn...but they are their own sound and band. the singer is great belting out primal screams..then changing it up with a soft yet mellow vocal (kinda like chino from the deftones). great band...i highly recommend this cd..these guys are gonna blow up someday. if you like korn and the deftones you will dig stepa. a stellar cd!!...go and get tha cd!!..a must see live band too!!

I will admit it is difficult to not be biased here, as I had the honor of drumming with Mark Thorley in the long-distant, hazy days of my childhood in elementery school band. Then in my latter days of high school, I recall how Blake Bechman graced the prescence of our choir as a second tenor. Despite this, I hope you will not pass me off as another teeny-bopper fanboy from their hometown. In all honesty, I simply believe this is good music. Sure I've lost a certain degree of objectivity by knowing these guys, but I wouldn't be taking the effort to write this if I didn't sincerely believe these guys are worth a try. I'm not going to promise this music is for everyone, as these guys are not about mass-marketing themselves to the lowest common denominator. Its tunes are ripe with angst, but not the silly teenage frustration we've all gone through. It feels more timeless than that, as its rage is crafted into awesome works of poetry and song. I hope you'll give this a try.

I don't listen to the radio anymore --- I buy CD's based on recommendations that I read on Amazon.com. These guys were recommended by people who have listened to and bought bands like Chevelle and Breaking Benjamin -- both of which I like.Have now listened to the Stepa CD a couple of times. I think these guys are a bit derivative. These guys sound a lot like Limp Bizkit with a little Incubus thrown in. The lead singer does a lot of Fred Durst-type screaming. But the music is interesting --- cool guitar riffs and syncopated drums. But the screaming gets in the way a bit. Not as good as Breaking Benjamin or Mad At Gravity or Chevelle, but not as bad as a lot of the lame a** stuff on the radio today.
