Book Description

This work is a truly remarkable portrait of ten real castles in history. Stephen Biesty's world-renowned illustrations combine grandeur of scale with breathtaking detail. Meredith Hooper brings the castles to life by introducing their knights and kitchenmaids, sultans and samurai, soldiers and spies, and telling the amazing stories of their dungeons and secret passageways, towers and toilets. Together, they recreate the real lives of castles as never before. Castles featured: Chateau Gaillard, Windsor, Krak des Chevaliers, Caernarfon, Bodiam, Castel Sant' Angelo, Chambord, Tower of London, Osaka and Neuschwanstein.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 - Eight castles in Europe, one in Syria, and one in Japan are featured, with a chronological arrangement from the 12th to the 19thcentury. Detailed drawings of each structure fill a spread, followed by a two-page action account of the particular castle - usually a historical event taking place in the course of a single day - accompanied by numerous thumbnail sketches and an occasional fictional character. The parts of the castle mentioned in the text are numbered on the tiny thumbnails, enabling readers to locate them on the large rendering at the beginning of the section. The illustrations of the castles feature cutaways and see-through walls, which are occasionally confusing, and appear to show only parts of the outlying areas. Overall, there is plenty to pore over here, but children will need to look elsewhere for a more complete picture of these magnificent buildings and their many functions. - Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Castle Book, June 16, 2005
My six-year-old son says, "This artist is a very good artist. He is great at drawing buildings and is great about knowing everything that is going on in his pictures. My favorite buildings in his book are the ones in water and the ones with lakes in them. My most favorite one of all is Caernarfon Castle from 1320." He takes this book to bed with him and examines each page very carefully.
