Editorial Reviews

Review

"The take away on the book is simply that it is a love letter to a designer who...has finally been recognized for the contribution he made to the continuum of fashion history." ~New York Journal of Books

"...captures the energy and vibrancy of the designer's American fashions during his rise to stardom in the 1970s." ~Essence

Format: Hardcover
A friend who read my review of Provence 1970 (the story of how a band of Amrican food writers took on Parisian cuisine and made a decsisive American victory over new years in 1971) reminded me that the exact same rout occured in the world of haute couture a few years later, in what was American Thanksgiving in 1973, at Versailles of all places.

This was the time when the French chose their five best designers and then foolhardily invited the American designers to come and show against them—the Olympics of fashion, and everyone supposed that the big French 5, including Christian Dior, Emanuel Ungaro, St. Laurent, Givenchy, and Pierre Cardin, would mop the floor with the Americans, who they considered only worthy of making sportswear. But, the big surprise came when the Americans, led by the young and edgy black designer Stephen Burrows, came with a flotilla of stunning black models and conquered the unprepared French. It is still hard to see how this happened, but happened it did, and from that moment forward the French have been watching the Americans with respect. It wasn't only Burrows at Versailles, but Anne Klein (and Donna Karan her aide de camp), Bill Blass, Halson, and Oscar de la Renta. The Museum of the City of New York had a big show last year to commemorate the 70s designs of Stephen Burrows and this handsome book forms a permanent record of that exhibition, edited by Daniela Morera.

We learn that Burrows made his way from New Jersey to NYC but a strict dependence on the fabric, "jersey," of his native state, though he came to give the jersey his signature touches. Many color photos will show you the so-called "lettuce edging" of the hems and sleeves of his provocative gowns and dance dresses, they look scalloped like potatoes.

Then stores would buy collections based on creativity with no guaranteed margins against sales...Young people could sustain a small business without the pressures of turning a large profit to the stores straight out of the box.
