5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music! September 25, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I do not have a cd in my collection that I enjoy more than the Robert Shaw Chorale "Stephen Foster Songbook". If you grew up loving Stephen Foster songs, you will not find a finer collection! I would rate it 10 stars if that were available.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs August 8, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific choral renditions January 26, 2006
By Osaggie
Format:Audio CD
I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great choir for the style April 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a great combination of an older style choir singing American classics. Choirs today don't sing like they used to, so this style works perfect for the music. Even our kids like listening to the tunes. I highly recommend it for any Stephen Foster fans.

The songs of Stephen Foster are gifts for generations of all people. The arrangement/performance here have made the songs lively; one shares the feelings of the songwriter. Thanks to Robert Shaw as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chorale versions of his songs July 14, 2013
By James
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stephen Foster was a great song writer and there are many different renditions of his music, from many great artists. This one is from the Robert Shaw Chorale and they do a beautiful job with multiple singers. The disk reminds me of Christmas carols sung by the Morman Tabernacle Choir. If that's the kind of music you, like you will love this "song book" of Stephen Foster material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of heart-felt American songs
This is a great collection of songs from America's past. Gutsy, sentimental, singable. I love playing it. My only objection is that the songs linger in my head too long.

3.0 out of 5 stars Please pass the sugar
I'm inclined to agree with Kenneth Gray that this is not a good treatment of these songs. It sounds like a movie rendering of the songs on the plantation. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Foster
I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.
