Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-12-It is hard to imagine this brilliant University of Cambridge theoretical physicist as simply a role model in a series on the physically challenged. True, he does labor with incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease), cannot speak (except by computer-controlled voice), and is confined to a wheel chair. However, his intellect is unaffected and over the years he has gained recognition as one of the physics community's most original thinkers. Fortunately, this biography captures that essence and celebrates the man's achievements rather than his limitations. McDaniel follows Hawking from his childhood to the present, placing his successes, awards, feuds, and divorce in the context of his remarkable life. The author even points out ways in which his disease has "helped" him to focus his great mind. She tackles explaining some of Hawking's theories, although his own book, A Brief History of Time (Bantam, 1988), does a far better job of it. Illustrations include black-and-white photographs of varying quality, as well as some computer-generated images, which will probably confuse readers rather than elucidate the scientist's work.
