This review is from: Stephen King 1: Pet Semetary, Carrie, Nightshift, Inner (4 Vols) (Paperback)
I admit I am biased; I think Stephen King is the best horror fiction writer ever, without qualification, full stop ("that's "period" in the USA). I have enjoyed all his publications over the years, and have thoughtfully refrained from turning up on his front doorstep, and presenting myself as his his number one fan, which would probably scare the poor man more than he has ever scared his constant readers!

I mustn't digress. I want to say that, in my opinion, "Pet Semetary" is the darkest book of all time. I first read this book at 18 years old, sitting on a coach bound from England to Italy, going on a school skiing trip. I still read it now, 18 years later, when I feel like a sleepless night.

The novel plumbs the depth of human endurance and sanity, and what happens when these boundaries are violated. It combines the sadly realistic posibility of an RTA, with the (admittedly not probable!) horrifying consequences ensuing from Louis Creed's actions. Life and death are examined, as are the boundaries in between. Love, often the most pure of motives, is here bastardised by the force of the Wendigo, and subverted (or should that be "commandeered"?) for its evil purpose.

The ending is gratifying, in the sense that some things do continue, even if they are undead, and full of malicious intent.

This book tops my all time horror chart, closely seconded by "The Shining".

I have reread my copy of Pet Semetary so many times that it's backbone has fallen apart, and is looking a bit bedraggled, probably a bit like myself, actually!

Anyway, if you haven't read it yet, and fancy a good fright, go and get it.

Sleep well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadfall of Life, May 8, 2001

This review is from: Stephen King 1: Pet Semetary, Carrie, Nightshift, Inner (4 Vols) (Paperback)
Pet semetary is about a family trying to get away from troubles of a big city and, for Louis, in-laws and a new job. The Creed family moved to Maine from Chicago, Illinois. The Creed's house was big and beautiful, but it had its secerts. Their huge yard that extended into the woods and beyond, The Pet Semetary. But that was not the problem, it was beyond that cost poor Louis Creed had to make not knowing evrything to all the stories about the power that lay beyond The Pet Semetary. Louis paid dearly withnot only money, and his health, but he put his loved ones at great dangerand lost a few in the process. This is a twisted and frighting book that seems to decive without a sense of security. I thought this book has great potential and was fun and exciting to read, especialy at night.
